Bitstream / PCM or Auto?

Question

Good evening everyone!
I have the Philips BDP 2500 Blu-ray player and in the menu, under sound, I can choose between Bitstream, PCM, or Auto.

Not knowing much about it, I would like to know which of the three is the best and therefore, which one I should
set.

Ok thanks! And will the sound be better in bitstream even if my TV doesn't decode audio streams?

if you don't have an A/V receiver, set it to auto if it's connected to a receiver = PCM, the sound is sent undecoded Bitstream, the sound is decoded by the source

I really don't know much about technology ^^
What does "encoded" mean? "non-encoded"? ^^

And what is an A/V receiver?
Because I have a Samsung Full HD TV equipped with Dolby Digital Plus and SRS Surround (True Surround XP)

So what should I set it to?...

A/V receiver = home theater receiver set to "auto" if your TV decodes audio streams, set to Bitstream

Already, with a state-of-the-art amplifier, the difference isn't really audible, so I doubt you could tell a difference with a TV!!! In any case, nothing stops you from trying!
