Double and triple jump new super mario bros ds

Hello,
I have New Super Mario Bros and I can't manage to do a double or triple jump; I've read the manual but nothing works, I just can't do it. Could you please help me?

    To perform the triple jump, all you need to do is run (by pressing 'y') and jump 3 times in a row while continuing to run.

    It's that simple; for beginners, I recommend taking the m1-1, taking the giant, destroying everything, and going back to the beginning of the level.
    After that, you will have a flat surface to do the triple jump (it's easier on flat ground, but it can be done where it's not flat).

    Actually, you jump and once you're in the air, you press the down button.
