Previous button blocked on certain sites
bell -
Some websites block the ability to go back to the previous page. In this case, the left arrow at the top left in IE or Firefox can still be clicked, but it does not yield any results. This is very frustrating when doing research online. Sometimes it works by double-clicking, but sometimes it doesn't work at all. The problem is the same across different browsers and various versions.
- Is it allowed to block this back navigation? Isn't it an infringement on the freedom of the internet user?
- How can this block be bypassed? Searching through history to find where we came from is not very practical, especially since we don't always pay attention to the names of the sites we visit.
Thank you in advance

Hello, this blocking is not always intentional on the part of the website designers (it is rarely, if ever, a desire to prevent you from going back), and it is easily bypassable. Sometimes a page redirects you to another one. When you hit "back," you end up on the page that redirects you immediately, which is why you feel like nothing is happening.
To bypass the problem: instead of clicking the back button, click on the small black arrow pointing down that is right next to the back button.
This will show you a list of the most recently viewed pages. Instead of clicking on the top one in the list (if you do, it's like clicking "back"), click on the one just below it. You will reach the second-to-last page and thus bypass the page that redirects you. -
Hello, I know this thread is over 10 years old and so the configuration of arrows given in response has probably changed, because I have the same annoyance of not being able to go back on some websites, but I don't see any small black arrow under the back arrow... So I have to leave Google and then restart it.
So if anyone has a trick for 2024...
Thanks! :-)

Hello Whovian
-For Firefox click on the history button, then history, and in the list of recent history you can already choose one of the last 40 visited pages.
-As usual, Firefox offers 50 different ways to do things. Ctrl+h opens the history sidebar, showing all saved pages.
-Still read this page explaining why the back button is often disabled in browsers, it's since the advent of forms to fill out on sites, and the risk of accidentally losing (simply by going back it completely erases it), the already saved data, which is really very very annoying (around 2022):

-For IE it's better to refrain, today it is no longer supported and remains with the last uncorrected security flaws that are widely exploited to infest computers. Tutorials are widely circulated everywhere on how to make it inactive.
