Hello. Since this afternoon, when I try to modify the files on my USB drive, I'm told that the disk is write-protected. How can I remove this protection? I don't even know where it came from.
Thank you

It's very simple, on your USB drive (on the device itself), there is a way to write-protect it. It's a button that should be called "hold" or "lock" or "protect."
Just put it back to its original position and you're good to go!
It's really simple... Even if you didn't do it on purpose, try to avoid messing with all the buttons when you don't know how to use it; you need to be very careful with technology.
Well, now you know how to lock your USB drive...
PS: If it still doesn't work, post another message on the forum.

Hello, click on start, type "regedit", then click on "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE", then "SYSTEM", then "CurrentControlSet", then "Control", then "StorageDevicePolicies", then "WriteProtect" and change the data value from 1 to 0... And everything's fine!
Hi!
Check your USB drive, there might be a small slider with a symbol representing a lock. Like on 3.5" floppy disks.

Here is a technique that works when you don't have a physical button on your USB drive to unlock the write protection:
Open a "run" window
Windows key (between Alt and Ctrl) + R, or Start>Run.
In the window type cmd. This opens a command prompt window (or something like that).
To go back to the root in your command prompt window, type "cd\" and then you need to navigate to your USB drive. It is important to know which letter has been assigned to it. This depends on the number of storage devices you have connected; it may be D: or F: or even G:. To find out, open My Computer and you can see the drive letter of your USB.
Once you know the letter, type F: (or G: I: depending on your drive's assigned letter)
To verify that it is the correct drive, you can type dir, which will give you the list in the root directory of your drive. If there is nothing, you will see nothing.
Now you will need to format the drive. It's simple, type "format F:" (or format G: format I: depending on your drive's assigned letter)
Questions will be asked; always respond "yes" (press y) and the formatting of your drive can begin.
For my part, this helped me solve the write protection problem on my drive. I hope it will be the same for you.

Hello, I have read everything that has been written on this forum regarding write protection
I have a "kingmax" 128 MB SD card and I am on Vista, and my problem is much more complex
than simply lifting the lock switch on the side
I can transfer files from the card to the PC, but not the other way around when I could do it before.
I have been searching for a solution to my problem for months and I haven't found anything that might resolve it.
Nobody responds to my calls probably because they don't know.
Here is what I receive when I try to put a file on my card:
"The disk is write-protected.
Remove the write protection or use another disk."
I have tried to reformat it from MS-DOS, but it gives me the same message.
I have already manually reformatted my SD card, but it was useless.
However, when files are sent to me via Bluetooth on my phone, I can put them directly onto my card.
I think it might be Windows Vista but I'm not sure, and I have really been struggling for a while now, so if you have the kindness to help me, I thank you.

Hello
I just bought an "Emtec UDISK 2.0" USB stick without a physical write protection button, and my basic computer knowledge doesn't allow me to remove the write protection. If you could help me, I would be very grateful.
Thank you.

This software does not recognize my drive even though it is properly connected (but as soon as I plug it in or click on it, it asks me to format it, and when I click on format, it tells me Windows cannot format it because it is write-protected. I remind you that there is no button on the drive (I opened it to check, but there is only the electronic circuit (which does not contain a switch to lock) the blockage occurred when I wanted to format my USB drive with Linux.
Thank you for helping me, I was starting to despair. I have two micro SD cards and I thought they were dead. Thanks again.
The solution for everyone
I found a software that can help you: HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool
It suggests that you format your drive: for example
_ Device USB
_ File system NTFS
_ Check Quick format & Enable compression

Hello,
Browsing from forum to forum, I'm looking for the answer to a question that is the perfect opposite of yours.
I'm taking my chance and I'm sorry I can't help you.
Is there a way to set a USB flash drive to read-only, that is, to prevent any modifications to its content?
Let’s clarify that this is not a drive with a button for this operation.
Thank you.

I found the miracle solution!!
- Boot from a live Linux CD
- Insert the USB key
- Give full permissions to the key (which we can't easily do under Windows!!) => right-click => Properties => Read & Write for "File Access" for Owner, Group and Others.
==> FUNCTIONAL USB KEY!!! ALL RIGHT!

Hello!
I have the same problem, a 16GB USB stick that used to work and now, as soon as I insert it, formatting doesn't work because it is write-protected.
I've tried using cmd, various programs (usbwriter, JetFlash...) and even the registry editor, but nothing has worked ^^
I opened it and there is a marking DMZ-335 in one spot, if that helps, I don't know, and there are some other small numbers on the other side.
If anyone has a solution, I would appreciate it!
Thanks in advance :)

Another thing: right-click on the USB drive, properties, tools tab, check now, and you have access to formatting or file copying again.
NON here's a link that saved me ^^: for me the solution is 8. once the registry is open, do a quick search for WriteProtect and change the 1 to a 0 http://www.ordinateur-informatique.net/blog/probleme/cle-usb-protege-en-ecriture
I look forward to seeing you on my space and elsewhere to chat ^^
