InDesign numbering, grayed-out menu

Hello,
This is probably a simple issue to solve, but I'm just getting started :)
I'm finishing my first book in InDesign, due tomorrow for a publishing class.
I want to number the 60 pages, but in the menu: Type > Insert Special Character > Mark,
the submenus are grayed out.
What could be the cause?
So far, I've only managed to number my pages virtually in the right window
> Page Numbering and Section Options.
But when I place my text blocks in the master page with 1 & 2 marked on them, it only shows 1/ and 2 on all the non-master pages; the numbering does not change.
I’d like to avoid doing it manually and understand the issue instead >.<
Thank you very much!
Here's a little screenshot just in case
(A & B instead of 1/2)

Hello,

When you are on "A-Gabarit", on the left and right pages, you create a text block where you insert --->Marks--->Active page number. So on the left page, in the text block, you have the letter A and on the right page, in the text block, you also have the letter A. Not A and B.
