Hello, after extensive searches on various websites, I was unable to find an answer regarding this malfunction.
I have a SONY TRV 740 E camcorder. Digital 8. It correctly displays all usage functions on the LCD screen.
However, it does not start and shows the self-diagnostic code C: 31:40 blinking in the top right corner, along with a yellow triangle and a rapidly blinking bar in the middle of the screen.
According to the guide, this code indicates a problem that I can resolve myself. There is no information on the value of this code.
What malfunction does this code C: 31:40 indicate? If someone knows and has experienced it, that would be helpful.
Thank you for your understanding.

Good evening, Sir.
I am writing to you briefly. A small unexpected phenomenon occurred. The camcorder was on the living room table. It slipped. It fell on the carpet from a height of 30 cm onto its base.
The impact caused me to realize that when I checked to see if it had any new problems, I found it was working again and all the error codes had disappeared.
As a precaution, I filmed the street at night, the scenery, the apartment with artificial lights. I tried various useful functions. All were correct.
In conclusion, this little shock must have released a part that was preventing it from working.
Yet I had tapped lightly on the sides, but with no effect.
This sudden impact on the ground had a positive effect.
It is possible that the lack of use for several quarters certainly has a negative effect on the electronic system. Therefore, I must operate it fairly regularly. This is what I deduce.
It is true that I used to use it regularly before, but for the past few years, it has mostly been sleeping in its box.
Now, I need to wake it up regularly.
Thank you for your help. My incident may be useful to other users with similar issues.
Case resolved. Thank you for your advice and your helpful assistance.

Hello, in the service manual of another cam D8, C31:40 = Symptoms: FG fault when starting drum, Correction: Load the tape again & perform operation from the beginning! My English isn't great, so I leave you to decode, but it doesn't seem much different from what’s in the manual, it seems to be a problem related to the drum (or the mechanical part around it). Has a tape been stuck inside the whole time it hasn't been used? Have you tried changing the tape?
Good evening, Sir. I am particularly sorry to trouble you.
I believe this problem is related to the recording drum as you mentioned.
As for the tapes, I never leave them in the recorder/player.
Once finished, I remove them, just like the battery.
I tried with other new tapes. No effect.
I reread the user manual. There is no security code. I even shook it a bit to eliminate any possible blockage. Nothing works.
I will probably take it to a SONY dealer who will repair it.
Only he knows the secret of the codes that are not listed in the manual.
I want to thank you for the work done in your research and repair suggestions.
It is possible that a camcorder repair technician may eventually inform me through the site about the actual malfunction.
What’s strange is that it always worked without any problem.
I haven’t used this camcorder for at least 9 months. It has been stored in a dry place.
It was when I took it out again for a report that this issue appeared.
Thank you again for everything, and I wish you a good weekend. As always, I think you will be helpful to various users of video, TV, or other equipment who do not know how to troubleshoot.
Thank you, Sir.

Hello,
Whatever you do, don’t hit it. The shock may initially allow you to film... Instead, quickly make copies onto another medium; the improvement won’t last.
Read the responses contained in this link (in English), the photos illustrate the problem well.

Good evening, the manual states: Remove the cassette and reinsert it, then turn on the cam, or unplug the power cord from the mains adapter or remove the battery, (you need to wait a bit) and reconnect it and turn it on.
Good evening, Sir. Indeed, I followed the advice given in the book that accompanies the camcorder and which indicates the different breakdowns.
What you mentioned, I had actually applied before your explanation.
It doesn't work, and the same error still persists.
The camcorder is operational, all the information is correct, but it refuses to start. Neither in playback nor in recording.
I have again carried out this new operation following your kind advice. It has no effect.
I wonder if there is a security code that could prevent the camcorder from functioning, like with safes where you can't open them unless you enter the code.
It’s true that I use it once or twice a year, but I remove the battery every time I'm not using it.
Nobody can tell me what this code actually corresponds to. Only SONY knows, but they do not disclose it.
The book indicates C 31: but not the breakdown of the 2 digits after it. 23 - 40 - 51 etc.....
That is why I asked the question to an amateur or a specialist who might have had the same problem.
It’s true that it is over 9 years old, and that practically no one uses it anymore these days.
Thank you again for responding to my ad and my request.
Perhaps, and I’m sure, there must be something else that is blocking it. Probably a safety feature that I activated unknowingly when I opened the screen flap.
There is a RESET button. Maybe I need to activate it to reset all the operating parameters. I am not a specialist and I don't know.
I remind you of the type of camcorder; DCR - TRV 740E Pal - Digital 8 - Mega Pixel - Super Steady Shot - with Memory Stick.
However, I want to thank you again for responding to my call.

Drawing on your experience and having the same issues with my camcorder (same conditions, long periods of inactivity, etc.), I was tempted to drop it from a height of about thirty centimeters onto a carpet, twice to be sure, given the reasonable price of the estimate; I was ready to throw the camcorder away.
Well, the C:31.40 error is gone, but I also read on other forums that a few taps on the side could fix the issue.
So just to share that it worked for me too.
A big thank you for sharing your experience all the way through, which has also helped me.

It goes to show that a good spanking has never hurt anyone.
I had this error and I couldn't take the tape out of the camcorder. A few taps on the side and the problem is solved! Thank you very much :)
