Hello,
I downloaded WinDirStat which found that 95% of my hard drive was occupied by files like 7a8c1.msp
(there are about 7500) in C:\windows\installer.
I have never dared to clean up C:\windows, what do you recommend I do? Can I delete these files safely and what are they for?
Thanks in advance for your advice.
Configuration: Windows XP Firefox 3.0.14

Hi,

Clearly, these are files left by software installations. Try uninstalling some software, or using a program like CCleaner.

Hi,
Thank you for your response.
I've been using CCleaner for quite a while, but I had never noticed the uninstallation page.
Indeed, this page lists a bunch of programs like "Security Update for Windows XP"
or "Windows XP Update - KB 8878472....
What are they, and can I uninstall them without risk?

Hello,
You shouldn’t uninstall the updates; they are there for your security and system stability.
What you can do on a STABLE system is delete the uninstall files. You won’t be able to uninstall them later, but you will free up space.
In CCleaner, go to Cleaner / Advanced, check Windows Installer Files, and clean up.
Uncheck this option afterwards.
