Why 512 MB and not 1 GB

Hello,

I bought a 1 GB memory stick. I installed it and later realized that my PC shows only 512 MB of additional memory. A neighbor installed it on his PC, which shows 1 GB.

What could cause this???

If anyone has any ideas..... Thanks
Configuration: Linux Firefox 3.0.14

multiple possible answers:
-the RAM slots only accept a maximum of 512MB
-the two modules are not compatible with each other
-the PC does not like this brand of RAM
-the BIOS is not properly configured
etc....

Good evening, you installed it in place of the other one.

The motherboard has 2 slots and accepts a maximum of 2 GB. I had a 1 GB stick and added another (compatible) one. Strange.
My neighbor lent me another stick of the same brand that shows 1 GB.
Any other ideas???
