Ctrl key issue Solved

Question

Hello everyone.
I have what you might call a minor problem (which I think should be easy to solve) but extremely annoying.
Indeed, Windows thinks that my Ctrl key is constantly pressed. As a result, I can't type any text. That's why I have to borrow my brother's PC to ask you for help.

Hi I managed to find a solution for this problem To fix it, you need to press both CTRL keys at the same time and then it works again.

Hi  What do you mean, Windows considers? Do you have an error message? Maybe try changing the keyboard to see if it's not yours that's acting up.

I also have the same problem. All shortcut keys involving the CONTROL key do not work, even in combination with the ALT key. I tried restoring my system to an earlier date but that didn’t change anything. I haven’t installed any software for a while and this problem is new, only happening in the last few days. I cleaned the system of spyware, etc., but nothing helps. It's really frustrating; I use shortcut keys all the time!!!

After consulting the same forum (very well done), on the topic of sticky keys, I found the solution: press the Shift key 5 times in a row. (I wouldn't have found it on my own, even with a pack of cookies... ;-)

Hello,

I'm having the same issue, except that it happens right at the startup of my computer.

To log in, I need my username and password...

My username starting with an A makes it ctrl + A, which translates to "Shut down the system"

This means that I can't log into my PC at all :/

The solution of pressing the "Shift" key five times hasn't been effective.

If anyone can save my life...

I've been having the same problem for a few months now, and I can't find a solution that will permanently fix the issue.

I deleted the password entries from my laptop, otherwise, I couldn't do anything.

My technique is to regularly clean my computer: when it hasn't been cleaned for a long time, the problem becomes unbearable, and a quick system cleanup gets it back on track. (sort of)

My solution: yes, it may seem very strange, but I use the on-screen keyboard in Windows (found in Accessories/Accessibility). Then I place my cursor in a spot where I can type text, and on the on-screen keyboard, I press ctrl + m followed by a single m. (I use the m because there are no ctrl + m shortcuts, but it also works with other keys). I keep doing this until I have text.

And it works... for now... until the day I explode my laptop because I can't stand unresolved issues.

When the keyboard is functioning "correctly," all shortcuts work except for: ctrl + x, ctrl + c, ctrl + v (the most useful ones). Once, I had a miraculous repair where everything was back in order (I think it was after I deleted a lot of unnecessary software). I didn't want to turn off my computer.... and then the problem returned.

I think the problem is present as soon as I turn on the computer because at startup, I get a black screen, and if I press a key, the system starts up correctly (the same phenomenon occurs when waking from sleep).

I checked my ctrl keys: I noticed that the little rubber piece does not adhere to the support. Could that be the cause? How much does it cost to replace a key?

If anyone has managed to solve this problem properly, it would be interesting to have a response because it is relatively annoying.

I have the same problem: sometimes the control key stops working. Then it starts working again without warning... The issue is quite random. I feel like it might be a virus, but I haven't found any description of a known virus of this type online. I've run several antivirus and anti-malware programs, but with no success. It's really frustrating.

Apparently, several of us have been experiencing the same issue for a while now: it's been about 2 months since this started happening to me, and I'm finding more and more discussions that mention this problem... Unfortunately, without a solution....

If anyone has any ideas... Workarounds, like telling me if it's possible to set up shortcuts like Ctrl+C/Ctrl+V by replacing the Ctrl key with the "Windows" key...

Here’s how I just solved my problem with the ctrl, shift, and alt keys that were working randomly (especially problematic when selecting multiple files with the ctrl or shift key):

A simple boot into Vista in safe mode fixed everything… after tearing my hair out for weeks!!!

I have the exact same issue on Vista with a laptop that's less than a month old. I type calmly and then the CTRL key gets stuck... sometimes it's the ALT key too... or even SHIFT.... but mainly CTRL. Yet the keyboard is fine. I have to press almost all the keys for it to go back to normal, but it doesn't last even 5 minutes before the CTRL key gets stuck again.

Previously, it was mentioned that a simple restart in safe mode was enough to resolve the issue. I did that; however, is there any action to take in safe mode? Because it didn't change anything otherwise. It's not a matter of sticky keys, nor an update issue, and definitely not spyware or viruses (unless they haven't been documented yet).

Could someone shed some light on this problem? Or help me solve it?

Safe mode reboot (without any special manipulation) solves the problem, in my case, only for the next restart... after that, it's the same issue again. So still no real solution :(
I have a wireless Logitech keyboard that works very well on XP, Kaspersky as antivirus... I really don't know where this problem could be coming from.

So don’t hit your PC, be patient and explain to it that you need it! lol

I'm really fed up. It gets stuck at any time, and this morning I nearly threw my keyboard out the window after smashing it.
The solution for me is to position the mouse where there’s nothing and then "bash" the CTRL/SHIFT/CAPSLOCK/TAB/ENTER/BACKSPACE keys all at once and on both sides of the keyboard (with both hands). It's the brute method, but it works after 3 or 4 times.
I can't figure out why... But before I used to hit the keyboard and it would go back to normal. Now, I have isolated these keys...
The keyboard suffers less...

I have the same problem and to be honest, I don't understand anything. My method is to open WordPad, open the task manager, click on waucktd, click on the text box and it works. Lol but I noticed that it might also be a timing issue, as after a certain amount of time everything gets back in order. Anyway, as soon as I have a solution, I will let you know.

I just had the same problem under XP Service Pack 2. To make sure the issue wasn't due to keyboard wear or some other technical problem with the keyboard, I performed an abrupt shutdown of my laptop, restarted it, and there, magic, it worked; the Ctrl key is no longer seen as pressed (the idea is to force Windows to load the settings, so I have proof that the keyboard is not dead and that it's probably due to an attack, but be careful, I think the person used a Trojan horse to receive my IP address and modify my configuration in "ghost" mode (invisible to the user).  P.S: when starting, I have Zone Alarm that starts up; generally, I disable it because it's heavy and consumes resources, but after startup, it blocked attempts to send my IP address from my PC. I've had this problem for a few days. It started with the shift key and then with the ctrl key (the most annoying, I admit).

I'm really stuck faced with this problem... I FIRST thought it was a dirty keyboard... SO I CLEANED all the affected keys (argh, it's starting again)... But no, at this point it seems to me that the issue arises when my laptop gets a bit too hot. The shift key is therefore very unstable for the moment, and the ctrl key often follows.

I can't find any solution on any forum, I don't want to send my laptop to HP's customer service? I care about it... A geek without a PC is like a wedding without a bride.

Hello,  After reinstalling Windows Vista Premium and some updates, and installing Office 2007 and Canon Pi4300 printer. The multiple selection function with Ctrl and Shift no longer works! Neither in Explorer nor in Office software.  I have already tried the registry HCU/Software/Microsoft/Windows/shell/bagMRU and Bags and the default folder display option, nothing works!!!  I don't know if this is due to a software installation or the printer driver? If I restore to a date before Office 2007 and the printer, it works again!  Thank you all for any ideas.  boby

Hello everyone, I don't know how you log out of your sessions, but I've noticed that when I log out by using Lock + "D" (Windows + D), it locks the "alt", "ctrl", and "windows" keys on one of my servers. Hello, I have the same issue with an Asus U5F I have 2 ctrl keys, one on the left and the other on the right of the space bar the left one suddenly got deactivated, quite disturbing when you're used to keyboard shortcuts. ctrl+v / +c or +alt+delete are now acrobatic fortunately the right one is still working I think it's due to an attempt with Ubuntu that can be done in live boot from a USB key or live DVD. even reloading Ubuntu, no keyboard settings solve the problem. since I cleaned my disk, I deleted the restore point from before the attempt and it’s impossible to go back. browsing the forums, I haven't found anything useful but well, I'm not stuck like some  good luck to everyone  @+

Hello everyone,  This post is old, but there aren't many solutions out there. I'm taking this opportunity to share mine.  I've finally found a "clean" way to solve this problem.  I downloaded the software Sharpkeys  http://www.randyrants.com/sharpkeys/  It modifies the keyboard keys through the registry.  I completely disabled the Ctrl keys. And I replaced one of the Alt keys with Ctrl to still have keyboard shortcuts. It may be wiser to replace one of the Shift keys since Alt has its own shortcuts. (to be considered depending on usage).  I hope this will be helpful to you!

Hello everyone, "Sticky keys issue" I have read all the messages regarding this damn ctrl key which, for my part, was always active, preventing me from "fiddling" with the keyboard to write, perform searches, opening X web pages, and my mouse which wouldn't slide anymore, reducing or increasing the page size! Anyway, a real hassle. I tried a system restore (I'm on Vista), virus cleaning and CCleaner, checked the virtual keyboard (when I could), and even submitted the issue to a technician = nothing, no results.  The solution I found thanks to one of you (the stack of biscuits that falls on the keyboard): you just need to press the shift key 5 times, a little beep sounds and a window opens asking if you want to activate sticky keys.  One piece of advice, don't clean your keyboard when the PC is on!! I think that's the mistake I made and ended up activating some keys which created a crazy association!!! Thank you a thousand times to the person who nibbles while typing (I didn’t remember the name, sorry) and of course thanks to the whole team for your contribution. PS: I tried the virtual keyboard with ctrl m + m and it doesn't do anything.

Hello,  Same problem.  The CTRL key sometimes gets stuck.  I've disabled the sticky keys as mentioned above, but it keeps happening. I can't figure out what triggers this.  To get out of it, I press both CTRL and both SHIFT keys at the same time and it stops.  Why?  No idea.  This only happens on the new HP EliteBook.
