Hello everyone.
I have what you might call a minor problem (which I think should be easy to solve) but extremely annoying.
Indeed, Windows thinks that my Ctrl key is constantly pressed. As a result, I can't type any text. That's why I have to borrow my brother's PC to ask you for help.

I managed to find a solution for this problem
To fix it, you need to press both CTRL keys at the same time and then it works again.

If the solution with both CTRL keys doesn't work, I managed to find an alternative. Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE and then click Cancel to return. The keyboard will work again.

Start.... All Programs.... Accessories..... Accessibility..... On-Screen Keyboard
Click the CTRL key then + then m
And there you go, it works again

Of course, you need to have XP and access to the desktop

I use the on-screen keyboard found in accessibility. To solve the problem, I hold down the ctrl key on my keyboard for a while, then I press ctrl+m then m on the on-screen keyboard and it works..

After consulting the same forum (very well done), on the topic of sticky keys, I found the solution: press the Shift key 5 times in a row. (I wouldn't have found it on my own, even with a pack of cookies... ;-)

Hello,

I've been having the same problem for a few months now, and I can't find a solution that will permanently fix the issue.

I deleted the password entries from my laptop, otherwise, I couldn't do anything.

My technique is to regularly clean my computer: when it hasn't been cleaned for a long time, the problem becomes unbearable, and a quick system cleanup gets it back on track. (sort of)

My solution: yes, it may seem very strange, but I use the on-screen keyboard in Windows (found in Accessories/Accessibility). Then I place my cursor in a spot where I can type text, and on the on-screen keyboard, I press ctrl + m followed by a single m. (I use the m because there are no ctrl + m shortcuts, but it also works with other keys). I keep doing this until I have text.

And it works... for now... until the day I explode my laptop because I can't stand unresolved issues.

When the keyboard is functioning "correctly," all shortcuts work except for: ctrl + x, ctrl + c, ctrl + v (the most useful ones). Once, I had a miraculous repair where everything was back in order (I think it was after I deleted a lot of unnecessary software). I didn't want to turn off my computer.... and then the problem returned.

I think the problem is present as soon as I turn on the computer because at startup, I get a black screen, and if I press a key, the system starts up correctly (the same phenomenon occurs when waking from sleep).

I checked my ctrl keys: I noticed that the little rubber piece does not adhere to the support. Could that be the cause? How much does it cost to replace a key?

If anyone has managed to solve this problem properly, it would be interesting to have a response because it is relatively annoying.

Well, listen, my keyboard is working fine now, I don’t know how or why... I haven’t installed anything new, maybe I did an essential update (I remind you that I'm on Vista); but otherwise, I really don’t understand.

So don’t hit your PC, be patient and explain to it that you need it! lol
To be more serious, if I see any signs of malfunction again or if I figure out how my PC returned to normal, I won’t hesitate to make a post to help us discover the culprit!!

I'm really fed up. It gets stuck at any time, and this morning I nearly threw my keyboard out the window after smashing it.
The solution for me is to position the mouse where there’s nothing and then "bash" the CTRL/SHIFT/CAPSLOCK/TAB/ENTER/BACKSPACE keys all at once and on both sides of the keyboard (with both hands). It's the brute method, but it works after 3 or 4 times.
I can't figure out why... But before I used to hit the keyboard and it would go back to normal. Now, I have isolated these keys...
The keyboard suffers less...

To reverse the effect, you just need to press the same key again (ctrl)... it's just that no one provides a real solution.
The probability of an infection is almost zero.

Are you using a Logitech mouse with the "SetPoint" software?
I have the impression that using the custom buttons on the mouse is causing this problem...

Hi,

I had the same problem; my CTRL key was stuck down all the time.
To fix it, I went to the control panel + accessibility options.
In the first tab, Sticky Keys, click on settings, and in the settings, uncheck all the boxes.
Okay, apply, and there you go!

Personally, I have a slightly different problem, but I don't know where to post this and since you're talking about the Ctrl key, well...

I hold down my control key to select contacts in order to send an email and after a few seconds (this can vary), I "lose" my control key and I'm left with only the last selected contact.

I should specify that this only happens with a Cherry wireless keyboard/mouse, connected via USB with a small dongle, operating at a frequency of 2.4 GHz.

A friend tells me this could be caused by interference with cordless phones.

What do you think?

Hello everyone,

For me, a little bit of milk spilled on my laptop and since then my Windows (Vista) thinks the Ctrl key is always pressed, so I installed Linux (Ubuntu) and that didn't change anything. So my problem doesn't come from the software but from the hardware. I bought a new USB keyboard but that doesn't change anything either. Well, the keyboard on my laptop is damaged and it's the one sending a signal to the processor that the Ctrl key is pressed. The solution was too simple; I ripped out the keyboard from my laptop from the cable, and for now I'm using an external USB keyboard without any issues (the Ctrl key problem has disappeared). In the meantime, I will look for an original keyboard for my laptop on eBay.

I had this issue as well, but on a server.
I deleted and re-added my profile, then I logged back in, and everything became okay.

Maybe the issue is related to the user profile.

I'm having the same issue, except that it happens right at the startup of my computer.

To log in, I need my username and password...

My username starting with an A makes it ctrl + A, which translates to "Shut down the system"

This means that I can't log into my PC at all :/

The solution of pressing the "Shift" key five times hasn't been effective.

If anyone can save my life...

So, you need to go to Start + Control Panel + Ease of Access Options + Enable your on-screen keyboard and then click on CTRL + Caps Lock... it should work normally...

Hello,

I have the exact same issue on Vista with a laptop that's less than a month old. I type calmly and then the CTRL key gets stuck... sometimes it's the ALT key too... or even SHIFT.... but mainly CTRL. Yet the keyboard is fine. I have to press almost all the keys for it to go back to normal, but it doesn't last even 5 minutes before the CTRL key gets stuck again.

Previously, it was mentioned that a simple restart in safe mode was enough to resolve the issue. I did that; however, is there any action to take in safe mode? Because it didn't change anything otherwise. It's not a matter of sticky keys, nor an update issue, and definitely not spyware or viruses (unless they haven't been documented yet).

Could someone shed some light on this problem? Or help me solve it?

Safe mode reboot (without any special manipulation) solves the problem, in my case, only for the next restart... after that, it's the same issue again. So still no real solution :(
I have a wireless Logitech keyboard that works very well on XP, Kaspersky as antivirus... I really don't know where this problem could be coming from.

What do you mean, Windows considers? Do you have an error message? Maybe try changing the keyboard to see if it's not yours that's acting up.

I've already tried changing the keyboard. But it doesn't change anything.

I have no error messages. I think that earlier, unintentionally (my bag of cookies fell on one of my keyboards), it must have entered a key combination that makes it believe that this ®?!#™$©£@ key is pressed down.
For example, as soon as I open a Word document and want to manually select text, it directly takes the whole line, or if I press A, it selects all the text (given that Ctrl + A selects everything, it can only be the Ctrl key).

I pressed the keys on my keyboard where the pack had fallen.
Result: my keyboard works again.

Hello. I have a friend who also has the same problem known as "the ctrl key constantly pressed." The only topic discussing this issue is found here, so I tried the only existing answer so far, the so-called "cookie packet" solution, which involves pressing all the keys at the same time. However, this technique works for a little while, but after typing a few lines normally, we find ourselves back in the original situation with the ctrl key. At that moment, I wondered if it was a virus causing this inconvenience. But I also want to point out that this problem occurs even before launching a Windows session (it can be observed when entering the password), so I think the virus hypothesis can be ruled out since we have the same problem even in safe mode. So if someone could give me a slightly more "scientific" explanation than the cookie packet one, it would be really nice of them.

I also have the same problem. All shortcut keys involving the CONTROL key do not work, even in combination with the ALT key. I tried restoring my system to an earlier date but that didn’t change anything. I haven’t installed any software for a while and this problem is new, only happening in the last few days. I cleaned the system of spyware, etc., but nothing helps. It's really frustrating; I use shortcut keys all the time!!!

Here’s how I just solved my problem with the ctrl, shift, and alt keys that were working randomly (especially problematic when selecting multiple files with the ctrl or shift key):

A simple boot into Vista in safe mode fixed everything… after tearing my hair out for weeks!!!

Hi everyone,

I've had this problem for a few days. It started with the shift key and then with the ctrl key (the most annoying, I admit).

I'm really stuck faced with this problem... I FIRST thought it was a dirty keyboard... SO I CLEANED all the affected keys (argh, it's starting again)... But no, at this point it seems to me that the issue arises when my laptop gets a bit too hot. The shift key is therefore very unstable for the moment, and the ctrl key often follows.

I can't find any solution on any forum, I don't want to send my laptop to HP's customer service? I care about it... A geek without a PC is like a wedding without a bride.

I have the same problem: sometimes the control key stops working. Then it starts working again without warning... The issue is quite random. I feel like it might be a virus, but I haven't found any description of a known virus of this type online. I've run several antivirus and anti-malware programs, but with no success. It's really frustrating.

Apparently, several of us have been experiencing the same issue for a while now: it's been about 2 months since this started happening to me, and I'm finding more and more discussions that mention this problem... Unfortunately, without a solution....

If anyone has any ideas... Workarounds, like telling me if it's possible to set up shortcuts like Ctrl+C/Ctrl+V by replacing the Ctrl key with the "Windows" key...
