Create m3u file

Hello everyone, there is an even simpler way to create an "m3u" file
With Windows Media Player 11 ... Create your playlist ... choose your tracks ... then
just above your chosen tracks, you have "Now Playing"
click on it and go to "Save selection as..."
There you choose where to put your file ... don't forget also to select "Type:" M3U ...
there you go, I hope this helps those who don't know yet ...

You can also create your playlist in DOS!!! Yes!!!
Click on Start/Run and then type cmd
A DOS window opens
Navigate to the directory of your choice using the command "cd" (change directory)
For example: cd my mus* takes you to the my music directory

Then type: dir /b > list.m3u

Your playlist is ready

Long live the 80s

To better utilize the technique proposed by mistral, open Notepad, and enter the following command depending on the case:
* if your tracks are in mp3 format: dir /b *.mp3 > Playliste.m3u
* if your tracks are in wma format: dir /b *.wma > Playliste.m3u
* if your tracks are in wav format: dir /b *.wav > Playliste.m3u
and so on..
Save everything in .bat format
Copy the created batch file into the folder containing the music files and double-click on it, and there you go, your playlist is created :)

Be careful now, the "Playlist" has changed position in the latest versions of VLC, but the tutorial remains valid.

On VLC, tab Playlist, then Save Playlist.

Or (still on VLC), you can simply use the shortcut Ctrl+Y which will directly display the window to save your playlist (note that the default extension is no longer M3U but XSPF).

To create a playlist
1- create a file with Notepad or another text editor.
2- Enter the following lines:

3- Save the file with the .asx extension (e.g., playlist.asx)
4- Open Windows Media Player 11 and click on library

5- Click on the playlist.asx file and drop it onto Windows Media Player, specifically on the Library on the left

6- Click on play now in Media Player
7- Move the folder containing the audio and video files and drop it into the left column of the Media Player

8- Select all the tracks
9- right-click on the selected tracks
10- Add to
11- Playlist

Thus the playlist is created automatically.

It's completely unnecessary to use software or even DOS to create an m3u.

The latter is just a list of file links in a text file.

Example:

--> create the file "File.m3u" (before that make sure you have checked the setting that shows file extensions, otherwise you will end up with a "File.m3u.txt" which is a text file, even if you don’t see the .txt)
--> open with Notepad --> write the following ->

C:\Documents and Settings\T0urmy\My Documents\My Music\Kenichi OST\14 - Heavy Metal Anthem.mp3
C:\Documents and Settings\T0urmy\My Documents\My Music\Kenichi OST\22 - Setsunai Omoi Dai 2 Gakushou.mp3
C:\Documents and Settings\T0urmy\My Documents\My Music\Kenichi OST\24 - Vandalism.mp3
C:\Documents and Settings\T0urmy\My Documents\My Music\Kenichi OST\33 - I Like MARCUS.mp3

--> save everything...
This creates a playlist. ;)

When VLC creates an m3u, it writes the file like this ->

I tried the trick with the Notepad, it doesn't work! Or maybe I messed up somewhere, I'm going to try the trick with MS DOS but, well, I don't really like it...

Does anyone else know something?

Yep to everyone, big big up to Toumy, because even I didn't know the easiest and most effective method for me :D Anyway, I also suggest VLC media player, because honestly it's free, it has a lot more <codec> than Windows Media Player, and there you go, you can create your playlists ^^ And it's also much lighter than Windows Media Player, which totally lags the PC (at the same time, I don't have a super powerful PC :lol: ). So there you go, and thanks again Toumy, I didn't even know that, you see ^^</codec>

hello .... sorry to revisit an old thread, but I have another solution for creating m3u lists

use media monkey player.

it's explained (in English unfortunately) in the software help. Basically, it goes like this

go to my computer (the one in Media Monkey's tree!)
target the folder where the files to be played are
right-click -> create new mp3
name it .....
you will see a file with the previously entered name appear
open the folder where the music is
select the desired tracks (or all) and drag them into the brand new list

there you go, done

for more complex lists, proceed in several filling steps

ps: Media Monkey is a real Swiss Army knife for audio!

My USB drive read by a car radio, PC, or MP3 radio player always boots with the same tracks... maybe it's the order in which I put the files on the drive?!
So I created a playlist to listen to the order I wanted and created a command prompt saved in a txt file and then renamed it to .bat (as I read on a forum). But I still have the same problem.
Can someone help me out :D

I recommend T0urmy's solution; it is by far the easiest. I already had VLC installed, which is an excellent audio/video player by the way, so I didn’t have to install anything. The solution he offers is simple and quick, and there are no special computer skills required to create your m3u file.

In Media Player, after adding the titles, you can save the playlist by naming it just above the list...

Then, you can find it by default in "My Music/Playlist/*playlistname"

Just had to look a little...

iTunes, you simply do "export" by right-clicking on your playlist and that's it...

I know, I'm late, but what we can do is create our playlist with iTunes, export it, and save it in .m3u format (or save it in any other format and change the extension afterwards) :D
