Hello,
I want to learn something new during the summer, so I wanted to know your opinion on WINDEV. What language are the programs developed in? Is it secure enough? Is it currently used by companies?
Thank you

Honestly, I've been coding under Windev for a few years now, and I think I have quite a bit of perspective...
Windev is great for developing management applications, and sometimes in a very advanced way. Each version brings its share of new features... and bugs, unfortunately. The new features don't always come immediately; you sometimes have to wait for a few patches...
You should definitely not buy a new version as soon as it comes out. It's better to buy every other version, for example... Until they stabilize everything a bit.
In my humble opinion, Windev is only effective for management applications.
You should avoid using 100% of the tools provided by PCSoft. For example, you should avoid using fields linked to the analysis; it's a hassle in the long run...
Personally, I'm developing a pharmacy stock management software in SQL Server (yes, it's possible under Windev :p), which communicates in XML with other applications programmed in Fox... which uses external classes, objects, triggers, etc... and is increasingly gaining market share...
The fact that we code in French is a false debate. (Whether you declare an integer in the form "i is an integer" or "int i", it amounts to the same! )
Yes, Windev can be "restrictive", but we shouldn't demonize it, nor idolize it... A good product. -
Hi,
It's a good product. I've been working with it for over 10 years.
To summarize, it allows you to develop apps without having to write hundreds of lines of code.
You can do almost anything with it.
The only flaw I know of is that the documentation is often behind the product's own developments.
They have a book of testimonials from their prestigious clients on their site: https://www.pcsoft.fr/pcsoft/120pages/index.html
One might rightly think it's marketing, but I do doubt that the listed companies are messing around with fake testimonials.
See you,
Adrien

windev :
Closed environment, hyper-proprietary,
No development community,
Code in proprietary file format!!! Can't be edited elsewhere than in windev etc...
Most modern (or not) programming topics are barely touched upon or nonexistent
It's impossible to think outside the box in windev (quirks etc...)
You quickly hit problematic limits when you want to do slightly twisted things...
Example: no serialization.
XML management is the opposite of all standards...
Are there updates from one version to another??? Well, let's just say the UI changes color...
Are there updates from one version to another??? Yes, things that worked before no longer work, etc., bug fixes and new bugs added...
Moreover, when you program a lot like I do in windev, you have to be careful to keep in touch with the rest of the programming world, otherwise you "unlearn programming," because the language is hyper-permissive!
Otherwise, it's true that you can churn out apps quickly that work... but it remains the zero degree of programming...

It's a BIG PIECE OF CRAP
that makes the entire professional environment laugh with their ridiculous marketing campaigns.
and the performance of the product is absolutely PATHETIC-
-
Hello,
I allow myself to write to you with a little delay...
And especially for this response to be read.
I find that you are very reductive and lacking in arguments.
CRAP and PATHETIC are often the comments from beetle sodomizers that I have often
met in my career, who were born with MICROSOFT's GAS factories....
I have worked with many systems from APPLE II to IBM MVS XA mainframe systems.
I have developed in ASSEMBLER up to L4G.
WINDEV has been a relief when I had to implement rapid
(READABLE applications unlike in C++ or VB) with a sufficiently fast database.
As a small story, I developed a specific application for tracking telematics support
in one of the largest European banks, and this was already 10 years ago...
In WINDEV 5.5 on a WAN network (accessible from platforms in NANCY, ORLEANS, PARIS, and LYON)
I was never blocked: sending emails via LOTUS, data encapsulations, etc...
This significantly contributed to obtaining an ISO 9001 certification for the scope of this BANK thanks to traceability and real-time assistance tracking.
After my departure two years ago, some smart folks like you came to take over the application using
all the MICROSOFT tools, and they spectacularly failed.
(No flexibility and disastrous performance on a dedicated INTRANET server while my database was on a desktop PC...)
So this application is still running without my maintenance since then...
Before criticizing, one must argue.

Hi FLEUR_LYS,
I discovered WINDEV less than 2 weeks ago and all I can say is: SUPER AWESOME. If you've programmed in other languages before, it will be super quick. I don't know if companies use it, but I think they should if they don't.
WINDEV allows you to manage a development project from all angles (resources, deadlines, objectives), you can go from analysis to implementation by choosing the tools of your choice (languages, technologies, DBMS...)
I don’t know much yet, but in a short time I've managed to impress myself.
IT'S SUPER AWESOME!!!! -
