Question

Hello everyone,  A somewhat silly question lol, I would like to know if the order in which friends appear on Facebook (in the box at the bottom left) has any significance.  Thanks in advance  Kisses

Barbouche, what I meant to say is that in the box where my friends appear, there is always an order, which actually changes often lol, and to be perhaps more concrete, there is someone I particularly appreciate who always appears first among my friends lately. It's not a silly question, I wonder the same thing! They're not people I see often, but it's usually the same ones who appear first. I think it's the people who view your profile the most, from what I can tell! But I could be wrong.

I think it indicates the people who are currently online on Facebook, ranked from the most active (who use apps, chat with friends, visit profiles...) to those who are inactive but still connected ;)

I too hope deep down that the first one displayed is the one who views my profile the most, lol, but we have to be realistic, I really want to know!!!

We know that:
- it’s not random, we’ve mostly all noticed that!
- it’s not the profiles we see most often, as a witness tells us
- it’s surely not those who are looking at us either, we’re not sure but that would be too good.
- it’s not the connection order either, because otherwise the first ones would sometimes be in the middle or at the end, and for me that’s never the case! (not for some of you either, by the way)
- it’s not necessarily the most active ones because the one who was at the top of my box and who I’m interested in, rarely logs into Facebook, posts very little, and probably only plays poker on FB... and I no longer chat with them.

To me, the most plausible explanation remains those with whom I interact the most passively and actively (mutual friends, common events, mutual profile views, etc.)
However, thinking about it, I spend little time on the person I’m interested in since I never see any updates, and I have less and less in common. And yet I saw them connect earlier at the top of the list!

I just thought of something, what if we looked at all the friendship links we have in common with the first person in the box! There might be a connection with the maximum number of mutual friends???

In this famous friends list, I see a person who appears often and is currently ranked 3rd, yet I interact very little with them at the moment, and our friendship is limited to 2 mutual friends and the last comment from mid-May.
Indeed, it is intriguing to see certain people frequently appearing in the "ranking," but dismissing the possibility of randomness so quickly seems a bit premature. I'm looking into it and will repost :)

Who are the friends that appear in the left column of my profile?
The left column of your profile can display different types of people around you:

We highlight the friends from your list.
By default, a variable selection of friends always appears under the title Friends in the left column of your profile. The selection includes friends with whom you have the most public interactions. Public interactions include posts made on the wall, as well as comments and events you have attended together. Facebook never displays your friends based on the profiles you've viewed the most or the people you interact with via email or instant messaging

So it’s certain that this list is not created randomly. Moreover, we can be sure that the profile pages that I visit do not interact with my friends list! However, it is neither stated nor denied that if I visit X's page, I interact with his friends list.

Uh, by the box in the bottom left, what exactly do you mean? On the Facebook homepage? Or on your profile? Because in those two cases, it's not the same thing: in the first case (homepage), it used to show (before) the people online, and in the second case (your profile^^) it shows your friends list...
So the reason for the order in which they appear may vary depending on one or the other...

Since the change in the display of online friends, when you search for help (I can't find the exact link anymore but you have to type "friends sidebar display"), they explain clearly that it includes those with whom we have the most interaction, whether they are online or not.
However, it is sorted alphabetically, so you don't see the person with whom you interact the most.
If you click "hide" the sidebar, you get the previous display back with online friends in the left column.

So we can ask the question again, as it is not in alphabetical order! And I am sure that it includes those who view our profile the most... because there are people whose profiles I haven't checked and whose posts I've hidden that appear in the box (which by the way is no longer a solid square now because it only shows the people online who look at me the most among all the offline people included).

Hello everyone.

I asked myself the same question when I systematically saw the photo of a girl I particularly like appear in my left sidebar. It's true that I was (very) often checking her profile and commenting a lot on her posts.

We have no friends or activities in common; we just exchanged a few messages on each other's walls.

So, to see if my attraction was mutual, I decided to stop checking her profile and see what would happen. The last time I checked it was about yesterday at 3 PM (so 26 hours ago). Since then, I haven't seen her in the left sidebar... However, I do see some people whose profiles I never check, including a few who seem to have not logged into Facebook for quite a while (over a year).

For a while now, I’ve been browsing and checking different profiles, some repeatedly, but they still don’t appear in my left list... Maybe there’s a delay; I’ll check later to see if those people show up.

Unfortunately, this experience doesn’t provide an answer to our question; it might even contradict what one might think...

I also wondered if the people we see appearing first in "instant messaging" check our profile. In fact, I started to look into it when I noticed a guy I like was there. About two weeks ago, we became friends on Facebook, we talked several times, but today is Wednesday and since Friday, we haven't spoken. Plus, I stopped checking his profile 3-5 days ago, but he's still at the top of "instant messaging," and in the second row (from the top) of the box on the left of the Facebook page, and that's been the case for two weeks!

So I started to come up with hypotheses... I asked people who appeared in the top part of "instant messaging" if they had just looked at a photo or something where I was tagged. Most had just watched a recent video in which I appeared, but I never check the profiles of those people... the other people in the top part are those I communicate with the most on Facebook, "my Facebook sisters," and for the others, I still don't know why they're there...

But I also noticed that the people who appear at the top of the small box on the left are not necessarily in the top part of "instant messaging."

In conclusion, I think we can find people who may not check our profile but look at things where we are tagged, the people we communicate with the most, and for the rest, I hope to find out soon!

I also wondered about those friend lists on profiles, but not about the chat bar (I'm almost always offline)

So I searched for explanations when I kept seeing the same faces pop up... Most of the time it's close friends, people I talk to, guys I might be interested in, family (that's less cool)... and then there are people I don't know why they're there except that I often see them leaving traces on my profile.

So I was wondering if it was me who was checking their profiles too much or them visiting mine... And I feel like it's not me (not because I would want it, though). For example, I used to go on certain profiles a lot, not anymore, and yet I still see them... they don't seem to be online often, but they're really present.

One guy, the last time I checked was Friday, he's still there...

In conclusion, I thought that it must be reciprocal interactions with or without movement...

Personally, the list changes even when I stay connected. And in this left list, there are only 2 people whose profile I check regularly, but not the ones whose profile I check the most. There’s even a profile that I only checked once last year, at the time of the addition, and some people with whom I have neither event nor "interaction" in common (group, page,...)...
I lean towards the theory of "who views our profile," and I think I will do a test in a few days to verify.
