watching a movie on your PS3 via USB drive

Question

Hello,

First of all, I don’t know if this is the right place for this topic, but anyway...
So, I saw that there are USB ports on my PS3 and thought I could watch movies on it, so I downloaded a movie (Bit Torrent), tested it on my computer (VLC media player) and everything works. I then transferred it to my USB stick (Cruzer, not sure if you know it) and plugged it into my PS3. I went to video, clicked on the Cruzer device and there it is, the drama, no titles.

Well, I thought the movie (in avi format) wasn’t in the right format, so I looked on the forum for how to convert it. I then downloaded PS3 Video 9 and converted my movie (MPEG-4). I transferred my converted movie to my PS3, and still, no titles. Its size is about 550 MB.

I explained everything in detail to be sure.

Go to the 'USB Device' icon, press the green triangle and click on 'Show All'. You will then have access to all the video files on the stick.

The USB key is a trap because even if it is there and on the PS3, it is primarily for the controllers! It is not stated that behind this universal port there are the computer circuits that allow managing the playback of video files from "mass storage" = external hard drives or USB keys of varying sizes. Only the computer does that, and it does it well. Now some manufacturers have made progress. Some can read a movie, for example, from a USB: that is not a generality, and some other manufacturers state in their catalogs that the USB port is for reading photos! (therefore not movies)
Sony today with its PS3 has not invented the "universal player"; it is primarily a gaming console. Sophisticated, indeed, but reserved for that use!

All happy, I put a movie, divx on my USB stick and I put the said stick in the PS3 to watch it, I go to video and the PS tells me that the file is empty, so it doesn't work

No, actually you create a VIDEO folder on your USB stick from your PC, you drag your .avi movie inside and then it works...

Karine, you say that the movie needs to be in AVI format inside, so why a converter then??
Alright, I'll try both that way at least I will have tried.

If it doesn't work, how can I put a movie I downloaded from my computer onto my PS3 to watch it on my TV?

after being skeptical because of Sony's negative response, I will remain so because for me, after trying it, it does not work, so why? I don't care... I have other players and an external multimedia hard drive that work well, the PS3 remains reserved for Blu-ray and HDMI games only. I'm giving up on the USB stick story

The thing is you have to write letter for letter, accent for accent the word VIDEO and then it works. I've tried several times and only that word works.

You don't even have to create a folder called VIDEO because I put "movies" and I put all my videos in there and it works, so why make it complicated when you can keep it simple? And of course, you need to check if the movie is in the right format (i.e. .avi or .mp4 or Xvid/divX)

Hello  I do this regularly, but my USB drive is formatted (previously in FAT32) my files are in divx (DVD> divx via neodivx a free software) hi ps: I "see" my USB drive in the PS3 menu

When you click on your device, it doesn’t do “Cross” but “Triangle” and you display everything ;) that’s where the problem comes from.
