SONY DSC H 5, 1,2,9 shutter button malfunction

Hello,
The trigger button of my SONY DSC H 5 camera has broken 3 times in a row, with the first two times being under warranty.
Since the second repair, the focus is no longer working properly, resulting in blurry photos.
The same issue happened to a friend with his Sony DSC H 2.
One site (photo, cinema, repair) mentions this breakdown specific to Sony for the DSC H1, H2, H5, H9 and states that sometimes the lower circuit including the trigger needs to be replaced. (because of rapid triggering without focusing.)
Thank you all for contacting me to find a solution!
Configuration: Windows XP Internet Explorer 7.0

Hello

"A camera of this quality must be repaired..."
I agree that this device is of good quality (although) ... as for spending 90 euros to repair it ... I disagree: firstly, because if we believe French or foreign forums, this phenomenon is recurrent; some Sony H1, H2, H5 have gone in for repairs multiple times for the same problem ...
Moreover, you can find the whole device online for 50 euros, maybe 70 euros ... Just have a look on Ebay.fr and type "Sony H5" ... Check out the ongoing auctions, it’s enough to discourage spending a lot of money on a repair ...
There is indeed a free solution, but I don’t really feel up to the task! I found it here:

http://focussonydsch.blogspot.com/

As for buying the parts, there are some for 50 and 30 euros ... I have the links if anyone is still interested!

As for the hope that Sony will recognize the problem and cover the repair for free nearly 4 years after the camera's release, in my opinion, don't hold your breath ... But I hope I'm wrong!

As for me, I've pretty much resolved to abandon my H5 in a drawer ... I will probably buy a DSLR before the next big occasion ... Maybe a Nikon D5000 or D90 ...

Best regards,

Hello,
I would like to have the links to buy the spare parts... my little Scotch system works well but still...
After spending 200€ to have it repaired the first time, I don't plan to send it back but rather to fix it myself!
Thank you in advance.

Thank you all for your testimonies and questions regarding the desolidarization of the trigger button on your SONY camera.
We are responding late but are retired and travel often!
After our 3 successive failures of the same part in a year and a half, and despite our numerous registered letters, emails, phone calls, and trips, we have been unable to obtain satisfaction for this prejudice!
Still unable to enjoy a fully functioning camera in peace, we have therefore submitted our case to "U.F.C QUE CHOISIR" for assistance.
We are going to court to raise a "HIDDEN DEFECT" under article 1641 and following of the civil code.
Also, if you fear further breakdowns (out of warranty) and want to lead a collective action to be heard, please let us know quickly.

P.S.: We are changing our Internet service provider very soon: how can we notify this forum of our new address?

Good evening!

I also have a dsch5 and the shutter button broke yesterday. I need my device next week so I can't take it in for repair; it works and I’ve fashioned a similar piece that triggers the shot well… I bought this device in a shopping mall and it’s under warranty until July 5th… I admit I’m afraid of losing stability even after repairs and that it might no longer be under warranty afterwards… how did it go for you?
Another detail, I lost the infamous button…
That said, I broke the battery cover of another camera and they preferred to give me a credit note for another camera of the same price rather than repair it, did they offer you that?

Thank you in advance for your responses.

Hello everyone!

I can confirm the epidemic! I just got back from 15 days of vacation and it’s (thankfully) at the end of the trip that the trigger button on my Sony H5 broke...
I found the button (and the spring) and was able to take a few more photos by simply putting it back in place...
The next day, it was over... No more photos could be taken...
I bought this camera in July 2006 (almost 500 euros) and it's no longer under warranty...
The best part is that I just saw it on eBay for less than 100 euros! Even 70 euros!!!
So 80 euros for the repair, I'm not thrilled...
Does anyone know where to find the part?
Thanks for your comments!

Khondji ;-)

Hello

A camera of this quality should be repaired. I took mine to DARTY, who sent it out for repair. It cost me less than 90 euros... 36 euros for the handling fee and the remainder upon return of the repair... a maximum of one week and 30 minutes of labor.

Hello everyone!

I'm back on this forum, which is definitely far from being closed!

For your information, on eBay, the entire H5 device is still being sold for less than 100 euros...

Then, still on eBay, you can find, for 6 euros, the "kit" to replace the button! But be careful, as stated in the link I included in my post in 2009, there are TWO types of failures for the button on Sony H5:
1 - The failure where just the button is broken
2 - The failure where the mechanism underneath the button is also broken!!!

The "kit" on eBay is suitable for the first case! Here is the link:

http://cgi.ebay.fr/Repair-Part-Quick-Button-for-Sony-DSC-H1-H2-H5_W0QQitemZ190340838767QQcmdZViewItemQQptZFR_IQ_PhotoVideo_Accessoires_Accessoires_Photo?hash=item2c5132b56f

You can also find it by typing "sony h5" on eBay...

As for me, my H5 ended up on my Freebox and serves as a camera for video calls via "TVPerso"...

And I bought a Nikon D90 Reflex! Let me tell you right away that I absolutely do not regret the purchase since the photo quality is absolutely and utterly incomparable and fabulous!!! ;-)) And I now understand that putting a compact camera sensor in a bridge like the H5 makes no sense... Qualitatively speaking!

Anyway, I've rambled on...

Best regards,

Hello

The link to the repair kit for 6 euros is very interesting ..

But I assume that once at home ..it's not easy if you don't have a minimum of equipment ..

How do you then take apart the crown that surrounds the button ..

Because if I understand correctly ...you have to place the button ..with its spring on the rod ....the rod ..passed through the

hole of the crown ..and hold the button ..with the small clip underneath ..so it doesn't fly away pushed by the spring

and once the button is in place ...screw the crown back on ..without leaving any marks ...

What can we use to unscrew this crown?

See you later

Hello Lanick,

To reassemble it, you need to place the spring on the push rod.
Then insert the rod into the hole of the crown.
Finally, place the "circlip" (small black plastic ring) into the groove of the push rod to hold the push rod and the crown together.

Once this assembly is done, your push rod should work properly within the crown.
Then, to fix the crown onto the Sony housing, it’s a bayonet system like light bulbs.
Be careful about the orientation of the crown in relation to the profile of the housing...
It's a bit tricky; you need to press down on the crown firmly before making a quarter turn.

There you go, good luck...!
If you have any issues, contact me directly.
Yann.

P.S.: The complete button with the crown is finally available on eBay...!

Hello

It's definitely an epidemic... I just lost the shutter button today (05/26/2009). I realized it when I tried to take a second photo... the problem is I was in the street... and there was some distance between the last photo and the moment I noticed the button was missing. I retraced my steps several times... but I never found the button.

A phone call to Sony customer service, and I should receive the address of the local service center for the repair.

Good evening, I am in your situation as well with a DSC H1 plus still under warranty. If you find a quick solution at a reasonable price, please let me know. Best regards, Jean.

Hello

My Sony DSC H5 is now at DARTY with a deposit of 36 euros for the handling and shipping of the equipment. My duct tape held up well and allowed me to cover a wedding. However, during the holidays, it didn't go very far.
It's then 50 euros per hour for the repair. Since the issue is well identified, it shouldn't take too long and the bill should be under 100 euros. For a device that was bought for just under 500 euros, that's still acceptable.

As for having found the button, it wasn't difficult for me. I am a "weather vane hunter" in my spare time, and I had taken a shot in one street…and in the next street, it was when I wanted to photograph the next weather vane that I realized the button was missing. I retraced the same path several times in both directions…between the two weather vanes and found nothing. I was with my dog, and having him on a leash didn't make the search easier. I went back the next day without my dog and more meticulously I scrutinized the ground, and it was by its shine that I was able to find my button.
The photos of the weather vanes are on the l'internaute website.
Now I'm waiting for the repairers' conclusions and I won't fail to share the repair cost.

Have a good day

Hello,

I have exactly the same problem with my Sony Cybershot DSC-H5 for about a year now. Since I work in Madagascar, it can't be repaired here, and I am stuck with the button taped. This is a very bad image for me, but also for Sony.

I bought it in a specialized store in Waterloo on August 28, 2006, and it served me well for about 2 years. In the meantime, I also bought a small Cybershot for my wife, and I got myself a high-end Sony HD HDD camcorder.

In the meantime, I gave the DSC-H5 to my daughter and bought a Nikon Coolpix P90 for myself (too bad for Sony).

There's no doubt this is a manufacturing defect, especially since I used the camera once every 3 months and took great care of it.

I will contact Sony. If they do not repair my DSC-H5 for free, I promise never to buy Sony again and to do some terrible word-of-mouth anti-advertising...

I will keep you updated on what happens next.

Serge

Identical for me, the DSC H5 button broke down just as I was arriving in Ireland for my holidays!!:! So, you think I shouldn't have it repaired?

Unfortunately, I don't think we can just take apart "the crown"...

I'll repost the link I shared earlier... On the same page, you'll find explanations in Spanish and English... If you're interested in the experience, please keep us updated! ;- )

Good luck!

I also lost my DSC H5 trigger in the middle of "Sri Lanka".
I cut up small pieces of coconut fiber that fit perfectly in its place
and then when I got home, I cut a piece of copper wire of the same diameter and soldered or glued it onto a bronze washer, it works well as a temporary fix while waiting for the part from Hong Kong.

The crown is removed with a small flat screwdriver, you just need to insert the screwdriver between the crown and the rubber part and pull it out of its housing.

You can buy the trigger button on eBay, here's the link: Repair Part Quick Button for Sony DSC H1 H2 H5

The assembly is very simple and it costs you about €6 including shipping

If I could help you

Hello

As for me, I managed to find the button the next morning in the middle of the street. It has been put back in place and is held on with adhesive tape.
I was on the verge of taking it for repair at Darty or FNAC.
The solution is to have it repaired by a Sony authorized repairer...

There’s also the option of buying a second-hand one for not too much money. There’s a SONY DHC 5 for sale for 150 euros on EBAY.FR that is in perfect condition. I almost bought it too... but since the button was found... I gave up.

See you!

lost and found trigger button... supposedly that never happens, the guy from Kodak has never seen that in 20 years but I see that my case is not isolated. Now let's see if Sony does what it should and I really hope so! ... luckily I had the extended warranty because I've had my Sony DSCH5 for 2 years.

It just happened to me as well,
I bought my SONY at Darty, They are asking me for €36 just to make the estimate and cannot provide me with an estimation of the next steps.

always an epidemic!
the shutter button fell into my hands once, I had it repaired and it cost me €191!!! and would you believe it was still under warranty but Sony refused to cover this malfunction deemed "hardware"!!!
How did you manage to get reimbursed??

7 months later, the same malfunction, after 3 registered letters to Sony, they refuse to make any commercial gesture! today I disassembled the little shutter system, the button rod is broken, I fixed it with tape... and it works!!
Basically, I wasted time and €191!

It is sad to see that Honda and Toyota acknowledge their faults, but not Sony.

At Sony, we observe the accelerated development of new models, so that any potential problems only concern a minority of loyal old-timers to their devices (therefore, it's impossible to take collective action when there are only 10 or 20!).

The era of loyalty to a model is over: the detaching button is part of a very sophisticated STRATEGY, which consists of intentionally manufacturing devices whose flaws will appear just after the warranty; why repair, when a new device that is slightly more efficient has just been released, at a price lower than that of the old one?

This is why we all have 7 or 8 PCs and 4 or 5 stereo systems at home, etc.

... in the attic!

Hello

It is still surprising to see such a price difference from one repair to another... see my previous message... through DARTY's services... a certified SONY repairman only charged me 90 euros...

See you soon

Hello,
Where did you have your H5 repaired? For the same issue, Darty's customer service is asking me for €145.
I contacted the authorized Sony repairer (the company Alert Technique in ERAGNY 95) who told me that this issue is not "common" and that the repair cost would be €130 and take 3 weeks.
I'm going on vacation at the end of March!!!
What should I do?
Best regards.

Hello

At the DARTY in the Villiers Shopping Center in the 77 (near Dammarie-les-Lys)

This breakdown is more than common... considering the number of messages in this forum... and let’s not forget about all those who haven't spoken up here... perhaps because they couldn't find us... and those who may have managed to fix their button... and so on... unfortunately, it’s too "common". But Sony remains silent...

As for the prices for customer service, it’s DARTY that sets the price... for handling... and then comes the price of the repair... for my part... handling + return after repair was less than 100 euros... I provided the correct figures in a previous message.

Talk soon

Sorry, I had the same prices as well. So, I went on eBay and bought a nearly new DSC H10 for the same price. I still have my DSC H5; if one day I can afford it, I will get it repaired because... even though the other one is smaller and more convenient, I miss mine a little... Happy holidays anyway!

Hello,
I have a DSC-H2. On the second photo of my vacation abroad, the shutter button broke. I'm so angry....
So now that I'm back today, I'm looking for a way to repair it. Following this forum, I'm trying to disassemble the casing and I realize how difficult it is. And by chance, in despair, I slide my nail under the crown holding the shutter button, and to my surprise, it comes off very easily.
So I order the kit for €6 on Ebay and I’ll keep you posted. So the cost of the repair would be minimal and childishly simple.
To be continued
See you later.
