Hello, I am in the process of creating an installation CD for XP and as part of the process, I am asked to save a file without an extension, created from Notepad. The problem is that I don't know how to save a file without an extension, so if someone has the solution, it would be nice to explain it to me.

to save it without an extension, you just need to follow the procedure: put the file name _ win51ic _ in quotation marks, like this "win51ic" (in the _ File name _ window of Notepad)...

There you go...

In the same way, you can add any extension you want (for example: "win51ic.moi") and then associate it with any software of your choice...

The extension of a file is a period followed by 3 letters behind the name (file.exe = exe, file.doc = doc, file.zip = zip, etc.)

When you open a folder or a place where there are files, do you see extensions?

When you do 'save as...', choose 'all files (*.*)' and name it test for example, without a dot or anything else.
Additionally, hiding extensions does not remove them and I advise against keeping this option enabled. A file named photo.jpg.exe will appear as photo.jpg, and one might think it's just a regular photo when it's actually an executable...

To create a file without an extension like in your question, you first need to create it with the "notepad".
Then you save it normally ("win51ic.txt", I believe), and then you will rename this file by keeping the name and deleting the dot and the three letters ("win51ic").
