The FAQ used to say:

If you get "illegal request, invalid block address" complaints reading from
an ATAPI CD-ROM drive, you may need to change "BCD=0,0" to "BCD=1,1" in the
file cdmkr32.ini in your Windows directory. (One symptom is that the track
on the CD will show up considerably larger than it should.)

Subject: RE: Invalid Block Address
Date: Thu, 15 Jun 2000 16:34:21 -0700
Dear Andy,
The fix for the invalid block address that you have posted may work, but the
most common problem for that error is that they have an IOMEGA zip drive on
there system or have a SCSI card. To correct the problem they need to
restore their ASPI layer. Below is what we recommend to fix the problem.
You get that error when your ASPI layer has been corrupted. Do the
following and this should correct the problem, If it does not clear the
error message then most likely the procedures were incorrectly completed and
will require the procedures/step below to be preformed again, exactly
(shortcuts will not work, such as instead of shutting down and restarting in
MS-DOS mode, using the MS-DOS Prompt from the desktop) as shown.
1. Shutdown and restart you computer in MS-DOS mode (DO NOT USE THE MS-DOS
Prompt Icon).
2. Enter the following lines at the C: prompt to rename the existing files:
ren c:\windows\system\winaspi.dll winaspi.mrx
ren c:\windows\system\wnaspi32.dll wnaspi32.mrx
ren c:\windows\system\iosubsys\apix.vxd apix.mrx
3. Put the Windows 95/98 CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive
(we'll assume that it's drive D).
4. At the C: prompt enter the following lines, substituting the drive letter
for your
CD-ROM in place of d:
WINDOWS 95 (Note the /l is a lowercase L)
--------------------
extract /y /l c:\windows\system d:\win95\win95_03.cab winaspi.dll
extract /y /l c:\windows\system d:\win95\win95_03.cab wnaspi32.dll
extract /y /l c:\windows\system\iosubsys d:\win95\win95_03.cab apix.vxd
WINDOWS 98 (Note the /l is a lowercase L
--------------------
1) Click on start - programs - accessories - system tools - system
information ->
2) click on tools - system file checker ->
3) click on extract one file from the installation disc
4) type winaspi.dll
5) click on start
6) in the restore from field click on browse and browse to you cd rom
drive with windows98 inserted
7) click on the plus -> click on the win98 folder and then click OK.
8) in the save in field it should show the c:\windows\system
9) click ok, click on skip when it asks if you want backup the file.
10) Follow the same steps for the wnaspi32.dll file restoration.
11) for the apix.vxd file follow steps 1 thru 7 for step 8 make sure
that in the save in field it shows c:\windows\system\iosubsys step 9 is
the same as the other files.
Best regards
