Hello,
I have a fairly annoying little problem in Illustrator,
the default black is dark gray (shade 1A171B) when it should be a deep black (shade 000000).
As soon as I export and go to Photoshop, the difference is stark.
I can, however, change this color to true black, but it’s quite time-consuming and sometimes Illustrator refuses.
Can you help me?
Thanks

Hello,
In Illustrator preferences ---> Appearance of Black ---> On Screen "Show all blacks as rich black"
Printing/Exporting: Reproduce all blacks as rich black.
In your swatches, double-click on the black, a window should appear with its % (100% Black). There you can modify the default black value.
When you create a PDF from Illustrator or Photoshop, blacks are not truly "black" and rich. You just need to add a support blue (usually 50% cyan) to achieve a deep black (and this avoids issues with printing).
Then it's up to you whether you want a warm or cool black. I tend to make a quad black, especially for covers or magazines (50 C - 50 M - 50 Y - 100 K) while being careful not to exceed 300% in total value (which is not well received by printers).
In your example, your black is around 82%, hence the impression of gray.

Hi and thanks for your reply,
The black in the swatch is now nice and black, but do you know how to change the black of the 'default fill and stroke' because it always stays at 0,0,0,100?
And since you seem to know your stuff, I will allow myself to ask a second question :)
In the swatches, when I choose a light and bright color, Illustrator "redirects" me to a darker, dull color (little warning panel yellow and dull color next to it) it’s like Illustrator is preventing me from using non-printable colors (if they are...) I’ve tried in CMYK, RGB, and HSL.
As a result, my illustrations intended mostly for the web are all modified by this restriction.
Thanks

The difference between intense black and plain black is a matter of QUADRI-CHROMY!
Intense black is made up of four colors: CMYK generally dosed as follows:
C: 40/ M: 60/ Y: 20/ K: 100
So if your black is 100% black but appears gray, the issue is with the calibration or brightness of your screen!!!
As for my knowledge, I don't think I can change the default black recipe in Adobe!!

You go to your swatches, you double-click on your black ---> Color options ---> Black name ---> Type: CMYK color.
Check Global. CMYK Mode. C: 50 M: 0 Y: 0 K: 100. This should apply to both the background and the stroke.
You will see that in your swatches afterwards, the black square will have a white notch.
For your second question, have you displayed the web colors (Window ---> Swatch Library ---> Web)?

thank you all for your replies!
The black from the color chart is indeed very black, thank you sarahmoon, the only one that remains a bit grayish is the default outline, it's not a screen calibration error because I can change it by entering the color selector...
And regarding the web colors, they work well but is it normal that Illustrator refuses to display the others that are too "flashy"? Does this happen to you too?
here is a screen for the web colors

When you display the color palette (what you sent), you check "web colors only".
Then you click "save for web and devices". A new window opens. You click on the color palette (you should have the used purple), double-click on it, and the web color window appears again, and there you transform it and click "save". Your image becomes a .gif with 256 colors and does not change. When opened later in Photoshop, it is still as vibrant, but slightly less so here.
And to get back to the outline, you take the same black, right?

ok thanks for the colors
I'm talking about this black

I can't change its default hue, I often use this function hence my "persistence" :)
ps I'm borrowing your little hosting service which seems very nice

But now that you have created this black (with the white notch) with 50 C and 100 N, I don't see what the problem is.
Once you have created this black, you go to the swatches panel (on the right in the dropdown menu of the panel): Save Swatch. You call it Black 50-100 and there you go. You will always have this black in memory. Just don't forget to display it, that's all. Let me know if I'm not clear...

Hello everyone
I noticed that your work is based on web color references! I just want to know if your job is intended for web or print! Because if your jobs are intended for print, you need to forget those values and switch to CMYK!!!

We can measure the performance of an eye! Not that of a gaze! You see!
