How to convert a video to MPEG4?

Hello,

I bought a portable audio/video player for my girlfriend, it's a Philips SA 5245. It's provided with software that is supposed to convert videos into a format that the device can read, namely WMV and MPEG4.
This software is "Arcsoft Media Converter 2.5".
But when I try to convert a DivX or a video made with my digital camera or a mobile phone, the software tells me that I'm missing the MP4 codec on my computer to convert the video and asks me to purchase the paid version of Arcsoft Media Converter!

I've tried to find this so-called "MP4 codec" online, apparently it's the MPEG4 codec, but I can't find it; the closest thing I found is the Koepi's Xvid MPEG4 codec, but that doesn’t help with the video conversion using Arcsoft Media Converter.

Could someone enlighten me on what I should do?

Thank you in advance
Configuration: Windows XP Firefox 3.0.4

Hello
I suggest Mediacoder (open-source software, which means free and without spyware..)

Download Mediacoder (for an up-to-date version: important)
2 links to install:

http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/getfile.htm?site=sf&file=MediaCoder-0.6.1.4068.exe
http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/

On this last page, click on the phrase "this link"

If the download doesn't begin automatically after some time, please click <<this link="">> in blue on the site

Once the software is installed and started, switch to French

>options>user interface language>>> choose French

(stop the program and restart it for the language choice to take effect)

If you want the simple interface, do
>options > user interface > Simple mode

The extensions menu (dropdown, not the button) allows you to adjust
the output format settings simply
by choosing your use (player, dvd,...)
but limits the adjustment possibilities

a suggested configuration
-----------------
Audio tab
Source: auto select preset custom
Encoder lame mp3 rate mode cbr
Sample 48000 enable audio: yes bitrate 128kbps
original channel
Gain 0
-------------------------
Video tab
Bitrate-based mode enable video: yes
512 kbps
Format Xvid
Container AVI
--------------------
Image tab
Resize: 320x240
Crop: disabled
Img/sec: disabled
Aspect Ratio disabled
Rotation: disabled
--------------------------

Best regards

Hello
I almost forgot, uninstall Arcsoft Media Converter which keeps telling you to buy add-ons and directs you to its website.
It's a real virus. I'm speaking from experience!!

Hello JC,
thank you for this solution, I will test it because indeed ArcSoft Media Converter seems to be a big commercial software with constant connection attempts and purchase offers...

For your information, I managed to get it working by adding the K-Lite codec pack to my PC.

See you soon and thank you.

Hello,
should we be careful with these codec packs? What is the danger?

Thank you.

Hello!
Just install the codec pack and you'll be good to go. No issues with Klite codec pack 4.4.2 (https://www.free-codecs.com/download/k_lite_codec_pack.htm ) except that I don't install the Classic Media Player (I use GOMplayer http://www.gomlab.com/eng/ which is announcing a new version for Christmas)
And for converting, it's a piece of cake with SUPER (https://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html )

Hello
Personally, I have never installed anything like that on my computer other than the 2 links I gave you and VLC

Hello,
have you found the solution? Because I've been struggling with my daughter's for 3 days now, we can't convert the .avi files into a format compatible with the Philips and the provided software doesn't work
I tried MediaCoder with the settings mentioned above, as well as Free Video Converter
I also tried using Windows Movie Maker, I was able to do it with 1 file but not with the others
thank you in advance

phew! apparently I found the solution thank you!
actually decoding with MediaCoder as indicated, but to put it on the mp3/mp4 you need to go through the synchronization of Windows Media Player
but if someone has another solution ;)
see you later

Good evening
I purchased a digital frame in November 2010 from car.... for the BFV882
It comes with a cable for PC connection, USB port, MPEG4 video, music, photos (its actual utility)
I tried putting a movie in AVI format via the USB port by going to the "folder"
and it works perfectly
You can even add music with the slideshow of photos
In conclusion, there's no need to convert to the MPEG4 format for documentary or animated movie videos
