Windows Mail-Vista Solved

Question

Hello,
I recently got a Packard Bell IMEDIA 9668, with Vista Premium pre-installed. Outlook Express has turned into Windows Mail. For the past 48 hours, I have been unable to delete two messages. Explanation: when I click on the message to delete, this appears in the message reading area: The message could not be displayed. Windows Mail encountered an unexpected problem while displaying this message. Okay. Another attempt: right-click on the message, then click on delete, and this appears: An unknown error has occurred. The same phenomenon happens when using the red cross to delete!!!
My question is obvious, what to do to resolve this malfunction?

I had the same issue with messages clogging the outbox without the possibility of sending them. I tried to delete the outbox folder from the hard drive but to no avail.

After a few attempts, here's how I managed to get rid of the problem:
- First, you need to know where your messages are stored by Windows (not so simple). To do this, open Windows Mail, then go to Tools, then Options, then Advanced, then Maintenance, then Storage Folder. There, Windows will tell you where the messages are stored (usually something like C:\Users\YOUR NAME\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail, where Users may also be named Utilisateurs when you open your Windows Explorer).
- Next, in Windows Mail, back up your messages (since I will delete them in the next phase). To do this, in Windows Mail, go to File, Export, Messages, and follow the simple instructions (select the outbox, inbox, and any other folders if you have created them, and save them to a folder on your desktop, for example).
- Close Windows Mail.
- Then open your Windows Explorer (or whatever it is called now since it's not named that under Vista) and go to the message storage folder (see step 1) and delete everything in there (except the Stationery folder): inbox, outbox, various files... the bug coming from one of them, but I couldn't say which. In any case, it's risk-free, my problem was resolved, and I just had to reopen Windows Mail, import the messages I had exported (see step 2), and recreate my account.

Here is the solution.  It is necessary to create a new Administrator User Account.  Once that is done.  Log into the old account.  Save favorites via Internet Explorer into a folder.  Save personal messages and contacts via Windows Mail into a folder.  Using Windows Explorer, copy all personal data from the old account into the new account.  The path is as follows: Computer/users/name of the old and new accounts that contain the personal data.  Log into the New Account, recreate all the shortcuts on the desktop, the installed programs are accessible from one account to the other via the start menu.  Reconfigure Windows Mail and re-import the Contacts and personal messages.  Re-import the favorites via Internet Explorer.  Finally, request via user account management the deletion of the old Account and associated data.  P.S.: the only problem I found was that the data from the old account had not been deleted by the system and I had to delete it via Windows Explorer, see the path described above.  P.S.: Microsoft did not respond to the emails regarding this issue in Windows Mail and directs users to Microsoft community forums.

Hello,  I had already found this solution at the very beginning, but unfortunately, it happens again on the new account as well. Either in the inbox or deleted items (which isn't too bad) or unfortunately in the outbox, which is more serious, because then it's impossible to send other messages. And indeed, it is still necessary to redo the same backup/creation of a new account, and after a few days, it starts again.....  Microsoft's silence seems to indicate that they don't care at all. I found something more practical than everything I've read online so far. I had the same problem with "undeletable" emails like "the message could not be displayed." After some trial and error, I ended up with a very simple experience: in my "deleted items" box (left side of Windows Mail), I select one email at a time, then right-click on "deleted items," and then click on "empty deleted items folder"; it works for me; however, for the emails that remain in the inbox, I haven't found anything either simple like the "empty deleted items folder" option, which doesn't exist, or complicated (because I don't understand all the "gibberish" used by tech-savvy internet users...)peho

Hello,  I installed the new Microsoft program "Windows Live Mail" (mentioned in Micro Hebdo) (http://get.live.com/betas/maildesktop_betas) 15 days ago, which replaces "Windows Mail," and it works perfectly. No more issues with blocked emails, and it automatically imports all the settings and messages from Windows Mail (except for the contacts, which I had to re-enter manually one by one). Hello, I had the same problem with a message I couldn't delete, and now my Windows Mail simply won't open. It says it's impossible to open Windows Mail because it cannot initialize the junk mail filter, insufficient memory, or full disk. That's the first message that appears when I try to open it, and the next one says it's impossible to open Windows Mail because MSOE.DLL couldn't be initialized. Blocked message in the outbox, temporary solution that allows sending again:  in WM: tool, options, account: export the account  modify the account name,  import the previously exported account, change its name  delete the account of the unremovable message and set the renamed account as "default" (if multiple accounts)  that's it.  the unremovable file is still present but when sending, at the message "would you like to use your default account to send this message without a user account" respond "no"  Wait for the Microsoft solution to delete the file and completely resolve the issue! In the meantime, respond "no" to each send.  For my part, even after deleting the incriminating file in appdata/local/wm/.etc, I still have the message in the outbox.

Hello,  I see that Microsoft and Linux are eventually converging: Microsoft delivers buggy software from the start, and the solutions proposed here (backing everything up, doing incomprehensible stuff) are very reminiscent of the tightrope gymnastics you have to perform in routine under Linux. (This vision of a complicated and poorly functioning Linux dates back to 2002; I threw everything in the trash after two months and haven't touched Linux since. I hope they have improved since, otherwise with Windows' degradation they might surpass them).   As for me, I went with Opera, which is the best browser on Microsoft, and which also has a functioning email system, although it’s quite confusing as it opens lots of windows and mixes emails with web pages. I’ll spare you the hours of guessing how to make it work: mellon, click friend, on the left border of the window to activate or deactivate the mail panel (and also bookmarks, contacts, history, etc.). Also, if you want to save messages, you have to copy-paste them into a text file. So it's not as good as the old Outlook Express, but at least, for those unfortunate enough to be stuck with Vista, messages come and go.  I haven't tried Thunderbird yet; I wanted to suggest it to others, but in France, few can manage to spell that name right after hearing it.   Another piece of advice, applicable to all software: always disable anti-spam AND ALSO anti-phishing, which can cause you to lose important messages. There are, however, companies that provide reliable data on real spammers, but in the name of competition, we shouldn't do the same as them.

I have encountered the problem of deleting messages with Windows Mail several times: Inbox, Sent Items, Junk Mail. The last time, it was to delete messages from an Archive folder that I had created; I was unable (at least seemingly) to delete the messages, and deleting the folder systematically resulted in an error and a restart of Windows Mail.  When I did Start / Search and entered the name of the folder, I noticed that the folder was empty. I then deleted the folder, but when I launched Windows Mail, the name of the folder appeared along with the names of the messages that I could not otherwise open. In fact, it was a residual issue in the Registry.  Everything returned to normal after running REGVAC, which is a registry cleaner.  You can download the trial version of REGVAC; it is free. A number of messages are corrupted when using Windows Mail, so you need to force it to rebuild its database. To do this, close Windows Mail. You need to be able to see hidden files in Windows Explorer; I won't describe the process, everyone knows it. You need to delete the file windowsmail.msmessagestore in your user folder appdata\local\microsoft\windowsmail using Windows Explorer. If the file is in use, kill the process via Task Manager; I won't describe that—everyone knows how to do it—and restart. Do the same with the backup file located in backup newdirectory. Open Windows Mail again; the database will be rebuilt. A few manipulations on the folders you've created will help reform the directories, and you can continue working.  This should work, and it seems to me to be the least complicated method.  Vista is really buggy; please stay on XP or use Firefox and Thunderbird.  Pat

Impossible to delete a message: "an unknown error occurred" The message that cannot be deleted in Windows Mail may be in any folder (Sent Items or Deleted Items).  Close Windows Mail. In Windows Vista, enable the display of hidden files and folders. Open this path: \Users\User_Name\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail. Delete a file named WindowsMail.MSMessageStore. Open a folder named Backup and then a subfolder named New. Delete a file named WindowsMail.MSMessageStore. Restart Windows Mail. You will now be able to delete the previous messages as well as those present in a folder named Recovered Messages. Problem submitted by F. Vivarelli.

Thank you @n@k for confirming this solution: did you actually notice the end of the problem after an update? Or did you see that such an update resolved it?  I'm asking the question because Microsoft has so accustomed us to their disregard for users, with their bugs that remain unfixed for years, like the annoying problem of disappearing file name extensions, which started in Windows 2000 and is still present in Vista. So I wouldn't be surprised to see the Windows Mail bug still around in ten years. In any case, the press doesn't talk about it, as if it's a minor bug that wouldn't bother anyone.  It's quite something to have successfully broken software that worked fine and sold it as is without proper testing!!

Like many others, I'm waiting for the ideal solution from Microsoft, but unfortunately, it’s not something to dream about. I believe that free software is an excellent initiative, but it has only resulted in poor outcomes. And if you say that, you get in trouble... because the free software community seems to be populated by leftists who are more focused on justifying themselves than on listening to people's needs. It's a shame; we could have done much better than Bill for a long time.

Yet: Options / General / Send and Receive = checked Options / Sending / Send messages immediately = checked I even tried disabling the "incoming" & "outgoing" message control of my antivirus. However, the issue of messages being blocked in the "Inbox" and "Outbox" has been well resolved by the fix 941090. Hello,  like many of us, I am using Windows Vista. I have been using Vista Mail for a week and when I chose Vista Mail, all my messages from my old inbox were transferred to Vista Mail. My old email account was with the Orange portal.  This evening, when I opened Vista Mail, all my messages from my inbox disappeared before my eyes.  What happened? Can I find them somewhere? To import contacts, you need to export them from the previous version first, for example, by creating an export file from Outlook Express. Then make an import of the address book. Next, go offline and create a new message. Click on the A: and you will see your contact list. However, they are not yet actually registered in Windows Mail, so you need to select them by 9 and send. Your 9 contacts will be saved and will allow for auto-completion (meaning you type the first letter and Windows Mail suggests options). Then don't forget to delete the message that landed in the outbox.  If someone can do it for more than 9 contacts at once, I’m interested. You need to work offline because Windows Mail doesn’t check the connection in that case and places your message in the outbox, saving the contacts at that time. However, if you stay online and unplug the cable, the application will tell you there is a problem and will not generate the message in the outbox, which means the contacts will not be actually registered.  There you go, I hope someone finds a way to do it for more than 9 contacts at a time.

Hello, I already had this problem with XP, that's true. I remember that it was fixed when I did an update. So first thing, you update it via Windows Update. To avoid losing all your messages, the ones you can move to the Drafts folder, it's still something saved! :-)  You can create subfolders in Drafts, don't forget that... Then, what EXACTLY does the error message say? With those words, go to the Microsoft website, in the search box, type a few words from the error message, and see if there is a suggested fix. Then, two processes: either you write down the KBxxxxx number on a piece of paper... and do more searches always using the same principle... and you note... KBxxxx... Then, you apply the proposed fixes.  Second method: When you get your error message, if there’s a button like "Learn more" or "Do you want Windows to help you find a solution?" click YES, that’s how I solved my problem with Windows Mail! I have the same problem, it prints every other time, and on top of that, with my mail, I'm starting to see about 20 emails that I can't delete, and there's also an email in my outbox that hasn't been sent and can’t be deleted either. For my part, the messages are sent well but it's impossible to retrieve them! And the counter of messages to be retrieved increments by 1 with each new attempt. I think I'm going to install Outlook, at least it's reliable! Unless someone has a solution to the above. Thanks for your experiences Jef

Hello  I had the same problem, it's impossible to get Windows Mail to work properly and Microsoft couldn't care less. The only solution is to get rid of it for good and install Windows Live Mail (free), which has the features of Outlook Express + MSN. And I assure you it works very well.  Only downside, the importation of email folders is long and tedious, but once it's done, it works very well.

Hello, I don't know much about computers either and I had the same problem; the after-sales service where I bought my computer told me that the only solution to this problem is to download an update from the internet for Windows that permanently fixed my issue; I was guided through this by the technician on the phone and I couldn't tell you exactly how I did it but I know there was a story about 32 bits, anyway try searching: Windows Vista update, you might find it, otherwise call your dealer they should know. However, the new issue my deleted items folder is giving me is that it mixes up deleted messages with messages I haven't deleted. For example: I have a message in my inbox. And the body of that message appears in another message in the deleted items. It also does this with sent items. It's as if everything is mixed up. Everything slips between multiple messages. Hello, tell me, don't you have your PC cluttered with messages dating back to BC sometimes? Think about clearing your "sent items" and inbox folders after a certain delay. Personally, I made a message rule to sort them (messages older than 60 days). Every now and then, I go into those folders, display messages older than 60 days, select them all (Ctrl + A), and hit the "delete" button on my keyboard. Depending on the number of messages, it takes about 30 seconds to do. Then I have a faster Windows Vista Mail... It feels good to clean up... from time to time. papicx

I had the problem on my mother's computer, Vista + Windows Mail. I installed the Microsoft patch, but nothing happened.  I installed Thunderbird, it works, it functions almost as well as Outlook Express, with added security. No comment.  If you buy a new computer, ask for XP; Vista works less well.

Hey  I managed to get rid of the problem (unable to delete emails in the deleted items) by first trying to delete the messages one by one using the following methods (right-click delete, the red cross when it was still working, in the message deletion toolbar... well, I’m not really sure how I got there, but when I managed to delete the last message (120 in total)  the problem disappeared...  good luck and see you later!

Hello everyone,  What's nice about this type of forums, aside from the fact that a large majority of guests can no longer write without peppering their speech with spelling mistakes, is that from time to time it becomes a bit vengeful...  Pignon's response, "The only solution is to stop using Vista ;)" (Pignon alone has an 'e' at the end because it agrees with solution... the twist is very simple.  Stopping Vista is all well and good, but when you have no choice, you just endure it, and we have all favored Windows' monopoly on our PCs...  I have a thorny problem to solve, and I haven't tried the last-ditch effort yet, but I'm not very optimistic. On my PC, there are a mother and a daughter who receive emails. I've set up my account correctly, and when I open Mail, I see my messages. However, when I want to change the recipient, nothing happens. No matter how I turn the questions around, nothing comes. Yes, Aureliane, there is a vengeful side to this forum. This is true in my case and I own it. And I'm not the only one. Some, who have known Windows for years, have long known that it's a dreadful product, optimized only to create beautiful screens. Others, who are still on their first computer, are discovering, dismayed, the problem, and vaguely blaming themselves, thinking it's their fault, not yet daring to think that a company as rich and well-known as Microsoft could sell untested products and swindle them like a thug from the hood, or like a garage that would deliver us a car without a steering wheel, saying that the new way to travel is to always go straight, or that steering wheels will be removed for safety reasons.   How did we get here? I remember, before Windows there was GEM, an OS that worked well, very well even for its time. But one day my computer dealer said that GEM was finished and that we "had to" switch to "windou". And since then everyone has been praising windou, despite the bugs, crashes, proverbial slowness, and inappropriate features... Everyone knows it, but everyone pretends to ignore it.   How did we get here? It would have been enough for users to unite and do something together (like Linux, but one that works and is easy to use, instead of being a geek thing). But nothing was done, as each preferred to only take care of themselves. And that's how we end up with monopolies, and also with political or religious dictatorships.   Ah, by the way, under windou Outlouke express, you go to menu tools>Message rules to send emails that arrive in such or such directory, for example mamam@ordi.fr goes into the Maman directory, and fifille@ordi.fr goes into the fifille directory. There’s also a murky story about users, the computer starts for example with user maman, and in outlouke express we create the email account maman@ordi.fr. Then we restart the computer with user fifille, and in outlouke we create the email account fifille@ordi.fr. So each should only see their own messages, but that’s the theory, I’ve never seen it work. And under funderbirde I don’t even know if it can be done. ...Update 28/08/2007...  Microsoft releases a patch that allows for the deletion of stuck messages in the Windows Mail outbox.  See KB941090 French version or English version  Note: It is specified that you must install "[...]this update to resolve the following issue: messages are stuck in the Outbox and cannot be deleted [...]". In reality, it allows you to delete stuck messages in all local folders of Windows Mail. and it works great  Bye bye

Why is this patch not included in the automatic updates?  Since it has been challenged by Firefox, which is much more serious about security, Microsoft has been providing automatic security updates.  But Microsoft is not yet challenged by anything that works better. Also, simply allowing software to function properly is not yet Microsoft's concern. Our software does not work, but that’s not a problem, as long as it is secure. Hey Bill, we don’t buy computers to show off our manhood or our status, but to use them, in this case to do our emails. So it’s better to have Thunderbird, which is 80% of Outlook Express, than Windows Mail, which is 0% of Outlook Express. Hello,  I also have problems with Windows Mail:  I organize my messages in my inbox: - into folders - subfolders,  I noticed that since I started using Windows Mail (I just changed my PC and I'm on Vista), I am losing access to entire message folders.   For example:  I have a folder in my inbox with 10 messages. I want to read one, and a content will display but it does not correspond to the message I want to read, rather it's another message in the same folder. Thus, I realize that all the messages sorted in this folder are identical, with the same content, and therefore the entire set of messages is stuck.  So in the upper part of Windows Mail, where my messages are displayed, I see them perfectly normally, with the correct sender, subject, sending time, etc., but when I click from message to message, in the lower part, it always displays the same one with parameters (sender, subject, content) from messages different from the one I wanted to open.  I tried to fix the problem by doing the recommended updates on this subject, I also did the manipulation suggested by Patounet on the 2nd page; "You need to delete the windowsmail.msmessagestore file in your user folder appdata\ local\microsoft\windowsmail with Windows Explorer. If the file is in use, kill the task process via the task manager. I won't describe everything, everyone knows how to do this, and start again. Do the same with the backup file located in backup newdirectory. Open Windows Mail again, the base will be reconstituted, make some changes on the folders you created to reform the directories and you can continue working."  It hasn't changed anything; the only change is that after reconstructing the folders, I find all my messages with exactly the same sender, subject, content, sending date, etc. The same result after switching to Office 2007 and after transferring to Thunderbird.  I really don’t know what to do to recover my messages normally because I have lost quite a few emails. Has anyone encountered this problem before?  Thank you for your help.

Hello, I've had the same issue, constant bugs. Especially Windows Mail, the webcam that doesn't work, etc... Impossible to send photos, it just freezes. Internet is very slow. I reinstalled Vista after formatting the computer, but what a surprise, I have the same problem. So I sent an email to ACER threatening to initiate a procedure for replacing the computer or getting a refund. A new product, we shouldn't have to modify, repair, etc... Me too, I had the same problem. I tried restoring it but it was always the same. So I decided to delete Windows Mail Vista and I bought a license for IncrediMail. It cost me €50, but since then I haven't been bothered anymore and I'm really enjoying it, because I can make beautiful stationery that I can download, since I have the license, and I can record messages to send by email. IncrediMail is really great; I do not regret buying the IncrediMail license for a single moment, and it is much more pleasant than Windows Mail Vista. There’s no comparison.

To improve and simplify the 'tapsa' solution, you need to copy/paste, under XP, the following path C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator (for example)\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail into 'address' from 'My Computer' and then validate. Next, open the 'Outbox' folder without deleting it; if necessary, open the files within it to copy/paste the content and finally delete all files of the type '3EBB7B2A-00000039.eml' found in 'Outbox'. Under Vista, you need to locate the 'Windows Live Mail' folder in 'Users\username\x\y\z and do the same as above.
