I don’t know if you know this solution: at startup press "Command+Option+P+R" to clear the RAM. Keep these keys held down until your Mac has turned off and on 3 or 4 times.
Rebuilding your Desktop every so often is good for it as well; at startup from the moment you press "Command+Option" until the end of the boot: you’ll get a window on your desktop asking "Would you like to rebuild your desktop". Click "OK" and let it do its work.
These two tricks should be done from time to time to avoid problems.

I am on a iMAC with 192 KB of RAM and OS 9.2.2
Every six months I start to get bothered because the response times
are getting longer and longer, to the point where they become unbearable:
the system grinds for several tens of seconds, even more than a minute
at startup and when I switch work
or document, color or font!
The only way to remedy this:
Make a full backup, wipe the entire disk
and reinstall everything as when I bought it new
It’s long and tedious... in one word super- annoying! ! !
How else to do? ?
Does everyone have this problem? ?
Has there been a version after OS 9.2.2
apart from OSX obviously which is very different
and not compatible with some of my programs
especially my accounting software
(the company disappeared and the software is no longer developed)

First of all,
you need to check the language
you may have downloaded an US international version not necessarily compatible with your FR CD
then it depends on your setup,
your Mac may not support OS 9.2.2
so there’s a little trick that allows you, among other things, to install 9.2.2 and more
it’s mac OS9helper 692KB and everything runs, installs without problems.

I recently updated my PowerBook G4; there are 2 update files: from 9.1 to 9.2.1 and from 9.2.1 to 9.2.2. You need to install both (personally, I stayed at 9.2.1 because the second file crashes my Mac).

Try starting with your Mac OS CD (you start by pressing the "C" key) and from there run your update file. It might not want to update the hard drive if you boot from it. --
