Scams on Match.com and then MSN...

Hello everyone,

Here’s my story. I met someone named Marie James on Match.com. Strangely at first, her profile address was a small village in Lorraine and of course, her profile was completely written in English. Once I contacted her on MSN, I learned that she actually lives in London, and she only mentioned that address because her grandmother had lived there for a while and she wanted to get to know people from that area.
Anyway, moving on... She also wanted to come here where I live... very very quickly, but that didn’t happen. Since then, we’ve kept in touch on MSN, her English was sometimes quite poor and her intellectual level sometimes showed flaws that an English girl wouldn’t have; I was increasingly questioning her identity. Despite the photos she sent me, she didn’t want to use a webcam.
I should also mention that the MSN contacts were sometimes strange... sudden disconnections on her part, with a so-called "Bad Network" from her Internet connection, or long waits before a response.
Then, since I really wanted to meet her and that I could now host her at my place, we decided to look into a flight for her to come. So we decided that I would send her half of the amount for the plane ticket, which is 103 euros. But yesterday, while we changed our clocks for daylight saving time... I casually asked what time it was at her place, and she gave me the same time as in France. This rekindled all the doubts I had about her identity. I decided to investigate and try to trace her IP on MSN to see if she really came from London. I found out how to operate on the internet and to my great surprise, I found an IP that sent me to Nigeria. No doubt then, it could only be a scam.
However, she didn’t admit the deception and appeared unhappy with the fact that we had known each other (while not really knowing each other, like some kind of contact) for several months. And it’s true that I am a bit confused as well. What would someone have to gain by keeping in touch for several months just to steal such a pitiful amount of money?
No idea unless there are indeed people with such a low level to act this way, and that’s more than sad.

I’m almost done ^^... so I nevertheless decided to send this money via Western Union (it was her who introduced me to it, as I didn’t know before). I wanted to clear my heart and take this story to the end, and for that, I was ready to pay 100 euros. Which I did online. And then WU refused to carry out the transaction for an unknown reason. The woman on the phone couldn’t give me any information. She simply said that even if I tried again, it wouldn't work.

What do you think? I believe the arguments for and against clearly demonstrate a scam of very low level. The test with the IP is confirmed because I tried it later with a friend also on MSN and he sent me to France. So there you go, I didn't lose any money but I’m still saddened that such methods exist. My God, what a crazy world...

Best regards and thank you for your responses.

Exarius.

Hi, yes, it's the scam I went through, he preys on lonely singles, but I didn't pay anything because how can a model earning €50,000 a year not afford a plane ticket? Be careful now, he’s checking on plane tickets, dates, time differences, etc., he talks to multiple clients at the same time, it’s profitable, there are millions of registrants on dating sites. Sorry, but there’s no secret, a 25-year-old model who is interested in an unknown 30-year-old single does not exist, unfortunately.

When you say it's a free site, my eye!!!!!! It was free before, but now, apart from the registration, everything is paid to see your (admirers!!!!) to talk to them and moreover, some make the same declarations and don’t remember that they’ve already spoken to you; one wonders if it’s not a machine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So, as quickly as I signed up, I’m unsubscribing, and let’s leave it to destiny and chance encounters, it’s much more enriching on all levels.

I agree with Martine because it's always the same people with the same words
for months and they never respond. I think it's a machine and not really
people looking for someone.

I have to say that I got taken and I wasn't happy about it. On top of that, they tell you they love you and it’s a joke, lies on top of lies, and they don’t know what else to say to us. The one I met tried to make me believe she had a coffee plantation. Why? It’s simple: it’s a scam on a grand scale in her country.

Here's what happens with dreamers...
On these sites, there are a multitude of scams. The first being to charge their subscribers as much as possible and make them believe that they will find happiness through them!
It's possible, but don't get your hopes up.
Either it's crazies who think they're stars because they receive dozens of declarations a day.
Or psychology students, or poor girls with a bunch of problems.
And very often scams coming straight from internet cafés in Côte d'Ivoire...
It's a full-time job over there!
For my part, I have a very simple way to know exactly where the person I'm talking to is located. When I have doubts, I ask them to send me an email via the form on my website, pretending there's a problem with MSN, email, or something else, and I have a little IP capture script that tells me exactly where the person is (except for anonymous IPs, and it's still easy to check in that case).
I caught "a very beautiful Cape Verdean" like that who was actually in a place 300 km from Abidjan, and probably a young black guy who was taught how to scam.
Côte d'Ivoire and Slovakia are, along with each other, the two countries that scam the most online...
The beautiful Ukrainians who are bored in Limousin, it's the same scam. And above all, never travel to the country, serious danger.
In any case, if someone starts asking you to participate financially in anything... get out immediately.
And ultimately, if you approach someone at an exhibition, a concert, or a gathering on a theme you like, you have a better chance that it will click than through a dating site where everyone cheats...
Exploiting emotional misery pays very, very well. So don't be naive!!!
At the very least, contact more people without photos than those who seem too ideal.

Hello Mister IP,
I am a victim of the same types of people,

how can I do like you to be more sure of the true origin of messages?

How to create a website as you explain?

and how to know what the actual sender's origin is,

because among these scammers, there are some sincere people;

thank you for your help.

Hello everyone,

Regarding the scams involving profiles on the internet, it should be noted that Western Union has a blacklist of beneficiary countries for money donations made by gullible individuals to so-called young women who will bring them happiness.
Rule #1: As long as there are suckers, there will be scams.
Rule #2: Exploiting emotional distress pays off very, very well.

The main countries are Poland, Russia, Ukraine, Ghana (English-speaking), Nigeria (English-speaking), Ivory Coast, and Senegal (French-speaking)
All the photos of these so-called pretty young girls are taken from model photographers who sell the pictures.
When these girls claim to live in France, their city often starts with the letter A. The guys behind all this can very well make a living with this system.
So, ask for specific information about their neighborhood, the name of their street, simply, and you'll see. It’s always amusing. Generally, it ends with "Well, I have to leave you."
I hope I've helped some of you, even if it pains your heart to know that Fatou, Irina, Natalya, and Nassima are... guys!
Best wishes to everyone.

Hello everyone,

I also come here to talk about this site where I had the same kind of problems, but with men since I am a woman (laughs).
At first, they leave me a message on the site. They are very polite, very gentlemanly. We exchange our MSN addresses, and that's where it all begins.
The first time, I came across a so-called art agent. He was leaving England to go to West Africa to buy his goods. We corresponded every day without any problems until he decided to make a detour to France before going back to London. He asked me to find him a hotel. I decided to search online and gave him the prices. I found one that suited him for his arrival near the airport. I booked it on a site designed for that purpose, but nothing was charged (thankfully!!!). It would be done on the day of arrival, they informed me, and in this case, it was me who would have paid with my credit card. He had emailed me his flight times and even the price! A quote, in short. And guess where he was supposed to arrive from? Well, Nigeria too! And on the eve of his departure, he started his scenario by telling me that he had a big problem. His credit card couldn't be used in that country unless he gave $1500 to activate it. So he started asking me for money. I, of course, thought that was suspicious and did not give in to his blackmail. Luckily, I had enough time to cancel the room by contacting the hotel. But in the following days, he didn't stop asking me for money again and again. I told him to contact his family, but he said he only had his 74-year-old mother and his 14-year-old daughter. No brothers, no sisters, no friends. Even his agent, who was supposedly gone with his shipment, couldn't help him either. The wife of the latter was about to give birth! That was the excuse for not helping him. Furthermore, according to what he had told me, the atmosphere was unbearable. Militants were attacking white people, a Japanese had even been kidnapped and would be released if a large sum was paid in exchange. In the following days, he even told me that he had been found dead. I was watching TV, listening to the radio, but none of this was being reported, except for two Frenchmen who worked there for an oil company, who had been released afterwards.
Every time he connected, it was to ask me for money. I told him I didn't have any and that if his story was true, he should contact the British embassy. And that was radical; he would log off. I forgot to mention that he asked me to send him money via WU, but I never gave in even when the amount requested was lower each time (from 1500 euros, we had gotten down to 100 euros!).
Weird!, right? This way of asking for money while decreasing each time!
It’s also surprising that for a businessman, he didn’t have his checkbook! And that the hotel management confiscated his phone while waiting for him to settle his entire bill. Finally, it went on like that for a while until he understood that I wouldn't give in, and then he would quickly get angry, change his tone, and say that I didn’t love him. But how can you love someone without actually seeing them? Especially since I must tell you that his photos were not the same as those on the site. There too, a problem! And it’s not over; I also had other people write to me with an identical scenario. The setting just changes, except at the end where we find ourselves in Africa, in Nigeria!

So, I know, it’s unbearable this kind of thing, but be reassured that when it’s not women operating on this side, it’s men. So let’s be vigilant! Good luck to you!

I had the same problem recently with an English businessman selling artworks. His name was Fed Collins, he was 47 years old and had a 12-year-old daughter. He was leaving for Nigeria for work. He had fallen madly in love with me despite our age, height, and background differences, and he even proposed to me. However, sometimes he called me Françoise, Patricia... and his daughter changed names...
When I pointed this out to him, he got angry and started insulting me: I disgusted him, I was like all the other women, and I had no right to doubt his words... only to declare his love for me again the next day!!!
I could never get a photo of him; the only one that appeared on his profile looked like a top model or a movie star.
I informed my lawyer, and he warned me about this scammer.
He never asked me for money, but since he was supposed to come to France at the end of January, I had shared my address with him, and he had all my phone numbers.
What’s also curious is that when he called (day or night), the conversation would end after a minute as if we shouldn’t be able to trace where the call was coming from... that already raised my suspicions.
This is my testimony.
When I broke up with him, I received another proposition from an Englishman with a pretty similar profile: short, young, handsome, and wanting a tall woman even older?

Camille,

As a moderation service manager, couldn't you prevent your clients from being scammed by acting proactively rather than reactively?

A simple check on the IP address would allow you to see that the profile was registered from a West African country while claiming to be American, British, or other... This should eliminate quite a few of these scammers who, in a way, tarnish your brand...

Best regards,

Hello Exarius,
how did you manage to get his IP?
I am chatting with an American 49-year-old, Tony BENSON, an oil engineer in Nigeria. EVERYTHING WAS GREAT AT THE BEGINNING, he drove me crazy with his very passionate declarations. He says he has finished his three-year contract and wants to come to France to marry me!! but he can't bring all his money (550,000 euros) and tells me he will make a transfer to my account. Completely overwhelmed by him, I agree. The next day I receive the transfer authorization from his bank "Guaranty Trust Bank plc" in LAGOS but they ask me to send them 1,350 euros for transfer fees; I refuse, telling him that it was too much money for me and that his bank should give him a check and once in France he would open an account; he says okay and requests the cancellation of the transfer; still a problem!! his bank demands 6,750 euros from him to cancel the transfer, otherwise he won't be able to cash his check; Tony tells me he only has 6,000 euros on him and I need to send him the 750 euros; I play along and tell him okay!
the next day in chat, I tell him that I have a problem with Western Union asking for his ID card because there are many scams in Nigeria. He takes it very badly but sends me a photocopy of his passport and no! the passport seems fake to me, the names are written in bold and the background of the photo is red.
so I explain to him that I have researched romance scams and that I have doubts about his intentions! I got tears, insults, and then a big apology from him who didn't understand that I paid attention to his scammer revelations rather than to his love!
I then send him one last email with an ultimatum asking him to be as planned on November 13, 2009, at Charles de Gaulle if he is really honest and sincere; otherwise, I will know what to think!!
no response to this email but an email with very sweet words to calm me down; I won't give up!!
I want to be sure about his passport. Thank you
and if others have dealt with this Tony Benson, please let me know
good luck to all
Martine

Good evening, just one thing, rather a question. Do you read the newspapers or listen to the news? Because it's a scam that is not new, of course, he's going to scam you, it's a network that does nothing else all day long, so trust me, and as soon as someone asks you anything related to money, forget it. Best regards, Jef.

It's exactly the same thing that happened to me with the same person (well, there are several of them), but don't think it's a small scam! Then they ask you for money for the immigration service (the BTA), which is already another red flag because it's between the UK and France? Then, in general, your sweetheart has a "fatal accident" on the way to the airport, she's on the brink of death, it's the doctor who writes to you, and you're asked to pay the medical fees in cash (in England???), then suddenly, she's better and it's her who writes to you, saying you need to pay for medication. That's when the ultimate goal of the scam arises: she has problems recovering her parents' inheritance, which is in a treasure chest in an insurance company, she's crazy about you and wants to come to France with her treasure, so you need to pay the insurance company, etc. ... and then her computer has issues, her messages become increasingly rare ...
Quickly, all the documents they send you are fake, the photos too, and be careful with the word London if you do searches, make sure to specify UK because there are Londons everywhere! So if for a simple address after trying all the search engines it's a failure, don't hesitate to call the British tourist office, and if you know the SMTP protocol, the best thing is to decode the header (the source of the email).
I end by telling you that there is something worse than Match.com, it's C-Date (Casual Dating), look closely at all the pages of your profile and you will see that the headquarters of this site is in Nigeria (so no comment, just throw it all away)!
Cheers to everyone.

Good evening everyone,

I'm here to contribute my part.

The last idiot who tried to scam my mother is named:

Bradley Edward Harney
58 years old, widower, no children, businessman.
He left for Nigeria on Monday for business and is asking for 890 euros on the pretext that his hotel does not accept gold MasterCards.
Email address: lovinged@live.com

My mother still believes he is a real person, but fortunately, I watched a television report about these African scams!

By the way, do you know of a site where you can check an IP??

Thank you.

Hi JoJo

To convince your mother that this is a scam, it would be wise to post on the forum the text of one of the emails (removing your mother's personal information). We will search to see if another victim has already posted this scenario.
Indeed, these scammers use the same texts for multiple victims.
If one of them has already posted an identical email, your mother will have to come to terms with it.

Sign up on this forum and contact me through private messaging. Your mom might lose much more than 890 euros, believe me. I can help her, it's urgent.
I need to talk to her. Do everything you can, your mom is going to suffer a lot, you must help her. I’m counting on you.

Hello Exarius,
I am a woman who is a victim of a man! It's the story of a widowed English businessman whose wife was an art dealer, who had an 8-year-old daughter, living in the Westminster area (the Buckingham Palace neighborhood, a real fairy tale!) and who went on a trip where, I'll give you one guess,.....Nigeria! Since I am someone who does not place much importance on money (sometimes it's silly, I know), I sent him some sesterces. Anyway, could you tell me how to search for the IP on MSN? Because I intend to investigate.

Hello colere67,
To trace an IP, you need to have received an email from your scammer. It's easy because these smooth talkers flood us with poems and declarations of all kinds...
You can trace their IP if it isn't masked; it will give you the country and even the city from where the email originated.
To find the IP, you need to look for it in the source of the message (right-click on the unopened message).
Then, you need to look for this:
X-Originating-IP: [XX.XXX.XXX.XXX]
Copy these 11 digits and paste them on this site: http://en.utrace.de/ip-address/
And you'll get the origin of the message, finally from the computer that sent this message.

Thank you, I have to wait for him to send me a message because they are all open and the last time he was online I told him that I didn't believe him anymore, he seemed offended and then suddenly disconnected. What bothers me is that I saw him on the webcam a few days ago and he looked completely normal, just like in his photos, and he hasn't asked me anything yet.

Hello everyone!
Yesterday was the second day, when I logged into the site, and on the second day I was already getting attacks on my computer, someone tried to get into my PC, they are actually looking for information, the codes of bank cards, whether we purchased anything online and then they steal our codes and use them to buy stuff. The same thing happened a month ago, someone used my bank card code to pay for adult sites and they found all the information, from shopping stores or simply stealing from our mailboxes!!! Be careful, it’s dangerous to buy things online, because our registration stays on the account and for them, it’s an open door!!

not so pathetic the scam

It's funny on the app, trying to post an ad with your MSN in it... rejected by moderation
On the other hand, fake profiles generated by automatic translators for two francs, those go through without any problem
Profiles of women from different places with different ads but identical photos are allowed without issues...
So the moderation on the app is very, very selective...
And on top of that, they've raised their prices, and fake profiles with attempted scams are becoming more and more numerous
So one piece of advice: forget about the app which tolerates all these scams.

Hello,
I just received messages from a certain Fred Ducan (a Greek-American art agent living in London with his 10-year-old daughter) who then signs as Duron... Foolishly, I sent him photos and gave him some information because he seemed quite genuine, although a bit too eager without knowing me, which raised a lot of suspicion on my part. I should have cut it off right away. Then I went on Google and saw that he changed his signature from Ducan to Duron. Having seen the experiences of "victims" of which I am now a part, I just realized that it’s nonsense and I sent him an email expressing my wish to stop our exchanges. I’ll see if he persists, and I wonder if we can report this crook to Match; I actually have his username which is sporty1959. If he doesn’t back off, I’m thinking of telling him some lies as well. I’m furious with him and with myself.
Thank you for letting me know if I can block him in any way.
Ouppss!

Hello oops,

First of all, I searched for "sporty1959" and found a Norwegian with that username!!!!
Well, nothing surprising, as scammers use and change usernames and profiles like they change their socks (well... a figure of speech).

You are probably dealing with a Nigerian (or a Ghanaian) because based on what you said, he speaks English since he is pretending to be an American living in London.
I suppose he is widowed and will soon be leaving for Nigeria for his "business."

You say you are his victim; have you already sent him money? Because usually, they only ask for money once they are in Africa, for various reasons (credit card doesn't work, he was robbed, attacked, etc.).

You shouldn't be angry at yourself because you are experiencing what is called a "romance scam," a love scam... Nigerians are the masters of this scam that can destroy a woman's heart (and sometimes more).

They all follow the same pattern, and the scenarios are similar. So it’s easy to unmask them.

You need to cease all contact with this man, who is likely very young, and has nothing to do with the man he claims to be. I know it might be hard to believe, but it’s the truth.

Aside from reporting him on match.com (but anyway, deleted profiles reappear quickly under other usernames), there’s not much you can do.
You can mention his email address here for blacklists.

I also encourage you to participate in the petition launched by the AVEN France association: Petition Against Scams from West Africa

Hello Isis,
I did indeed cease all contact with this man immediately after I saw the forum. I did it gently with "I'm sorry" just in case, as I had given him some information about myself which I never usually do. I sent him photos that I hope he won't use; that said, they are of low quality. I also blocked him on Match.com and changed my password. What bothers me is that I sent a photo of a painting (I'm a painter) and my signature is on it. I hope he won't harass me out of rage. I had the intuition to check this forum because I found his enthusiasm suspicious. He's a sicko, and God knows I've been escaping all of this for some time. Here I am on the list of naive fools who still believe in Prince Charming.
What's funny is that he has the same story, Greek of American origin, art dealer, one child, widower after his divorce: then his wife died of cancer (which intrigued me because I don't see why that would be mentioned in an email to a stranger on a dating site). And then some things that are a bit too "spiritual," which fits perfectly into the style. You see, I only met him yesterday and he's already out!! I would be quite happy to help other women detect this kind of scam if I have the chance, as I find it revolting.
Thank you, Isis, for your response, and if I can help in any way, just let me know.
Oulala

I'm glad to know that this crook won't count you among his victims.

You were lucky not to have been gullible enough to fall into his trap. Unfortunately, many victims only open their eyes far too late.

Don't worry, this guy will give up if he sees he can't get anything from you.

Have a good Sunday,
Isis

Thank you, Isis,
I assure you that he won't get anything out of me! And I really hope he gets caught! What a fool, he could have at least changed his story a bit!
But I regret believing it, even for just a few hours! I will be on my guard and unsubscribe from Match.
Have a good Sunday too, and thank you! I will keep you updated if he writes to me again on my email.

Hello,
did you keep any photos of your stockbroker? And can you tell me if he went by the name Fred Duncan?
I'm worried I might have come across him.
Thanks for your information, I want to be sure, I'm waiting for your reply.

Oops, sorry, I thought at first you were addressing me ;-)... anyway, it's no big deal. If you want to discuss it, you can add me on ICQ. I would be happy to talk about it. Just to compare our stories. Who knows, it might be the same person playing multiple characters. You never know.

See you soon, I hope.

I had the same problem as you, I'm experiencing it right now. Your Mary James could be from 40 Ibadan Road, 234036 Ile-Ife, Nigeria. She would be 26, single, super pretty, hot, with an Asian look. How many photos has she sent you? I have 5, 2 where she is in a pink skirt outfit and wearing fashionable glasses, 1 where she is enjoying a cherry, and 2 where she is in a white thong outfit in a kitchen. She told me she is an orphan... and she has no one to help her... and she is asking me for money to come see me, so I have to pay for the flight, because supposedly she has a check for £8000 on her but supposedly in Nigeria they don't accept it. And yes, she told me she lives in England but she is not yet a citizen there because she is originally from Greece and supposedly there is no Greek embassy in Nigeria... although I think there is one... please, this is super important, buddy! Reply to me after my message??? I'm waiting eagerly??? SOS???

Well no, this one doesn't say she's from Nigeria, I only discovered it by tracing her IP. She claims to be from London, yes I have about 6 or 7 photos. And the one in the photos is definitely of Anglo-Saxon type, it's obvious.

But if you want, come on ICQ so we can discuss it.. look above, I posted my ID. You just have to add me.

See you later maybe

Salut, can you tell me how to find an IP address? I think I might be dealing with a scammer of this kind, but I'm not completely sure; they haven't asked me for money yet. Thanks, I'll keep you updated. Marie

I too was a victim yesterday of this kind of person, he claims to be an art dealer in London and has a house in Porto. Yesterday he told me he was in Nigeria and that at his hotel he had been robbed and his little girl was beaten (he claims to be a widower). He asked me to send him 500 euros. In response, I told him to go to the embassy, where there was competent staff to help him. I met him on match.com, his username is princeofdestiny. His email address is frankninoO@hotmail.com. I am not naïve, but others may fall into the trap. Thank you for doing what is necessary to stop him from ruining the sites.

Aliases and addresses, this gentleman has many others as I have seen on your site. I have a complete file because I filed a complaint for fraud (€30,000) and harassment for many months, but the police do not conduct this kind of investigation, and yet I have many elements in my possession. I reported it to the Match services, but he has created many profiles again; he called himself DESMOND ANDREW to me. I remain at your disposal if you need more information;
Sincerely

Hello everyone, I was recently contacted by a girl at lilly_famous@yahoo.com who speaks English. I also have a phone number; +447031860725. I think it's a big scam. She started by telling me that her PC was broken and that she couldn't contact me before. I can't find her username on Match. I would like to be able to trap this person. She sends rather sexy photos and claims to be of South African father and English mother.

I was also contacted by a woman claiming to be from LORRAINE, and this lasted for a few months. Always the same story as all of you: sexy photos, infinite love, computer breakdown, fractured ankle, dead dog that were cleverly used as excuses for long absences and the inability to meet immediately. I discovered, through a manipulation error on her part when she sent me a message, that this person was simultaneously contacting about ten people of the same age and that they were all in the same situation.

To Camille
Hello
I have sent multiple emails and registered letters to London, all without response, regarding my brother Mr. Prigent Alain. His email address was rtt-elvis@live.fr. The situation is that my brother is an alcoholic; he was on about ten dating sites in April without really knowing where he stood due to his drunken state. After receiving letters from bailiffs about withdrawals from the sites, things went downhill very quickly. I urgently unsubscribed from all these sites by phone, but we cannot reach you. He will be going to rehab for 6 weeks and will be placed under state guardianship upon his release.
So please stop these withdrawals; he has not had internet since May 27.
Call me at 06 72 75 05 73 because since May no one has responded.
Thank you again for taking this VERY IMPORTANT message into account.

I wanted to inform you that your site Match.com is a real nest of fake profiles from scammers; it seems they are in the majority on this site, it's becoming intolerable.
The victims are numerous and literally stripped of everything.

What can you do, and above all, what do you intend to do?

A warning on the homepage would be very welcome.

Sincerely

PS: You can contact me via private messaging on this forum. Thank you

One must be extremely cautious on dating sites.

There are many victims reported on all dating sites, but particularly on Match.com and Meetic. The sums scammed range from a few thousand euros to over 40,000 €.

It is noted that any photo is accepted, even professional photos of models.
The ads are written in broken English, always featuring a businessman, widower, and American or British, sometimes Australian... the moderation teams see nothing.

No alerts despite the well-known problem
No tracking of IP addresses

Even better for some sites, you really have to search for how to report a fraudulent profile.

Conclusion: Ladies and gentlemen, STAY AWAY from dating sites
