Incorrect drawing file

What is the file extension that follows the file name?

e.g. .dwg, .dxf, .bak????

I also have *.dwg version 2007 (I have AutoCAD 2010). For me, the solution was to have the file burned onto a CD and then it opens without any problem.

I am currently having the same issue "Incorrect drawing file", it was sent to me via email and I cannot open it. I have AutoCAD 2013 and the person who sent it to me in the United States is using AutoCAD 2008.

The file extension is .dwg. I tried saving the file to my desktop to drag it into a new dwg file and it tells me "the file XXX was created with an incompatible version of AutoCAD 2013".
