How to play head-to-head FIFA 08

Hello,
I can’t seem to set up a heads-up one-on-one competition in FIFA 08. I have two controllers on my PS3 and I want to play against a friend in a FIFA 08 match as part of a competition (and not the Kick-Off mode). And we’re always required to play on the same team. We can’t play against each other.
In FIFA 2007, it was totally possible and we’d have a Champions League all night long, one against the other; here we’re forced to play on the same team against the AI.
It’s really strange, and if it’s intentional, I think it’s a major design flaw.

Hello actually I bought FIFA 08! and I play online all of a sudden I see a friend who has FIFA 08 and who plays online I was wondering if we could arrange a match between the two of us if it's possible how to do basically
