USB drive recognized as "Removable Disk" Solved

Question

Hello,

I have been successfully using a 1GB USB 2.0 flash drive for several years without any issues.
About a month ago, for no apparent reason, my flash drive was recognized by my PCs (a laptop and a desktop) as a "Removable Disk."

Since I absolutely needed a USB drive and couldn’t find a way to solve this problem, I turned to a simple solution... I bought another flash drive!!!!!!
Done deal... unknown brand 4GB USB 2.0, perfect!!!

Horror, this morning... my new flash drive is also recognized as a removable disk!!!!!!!!!

Impossible to go back, impossible to format or simply read it...

Can someone tell me why this kind of problem appears??
And especially how to solve it please!!!!!!

Hi everyone. I have a buddy who has a PSP and when we connect it to the computer, it appears as a removable disk and we can access it by clicking on it -_-' But the solution is here: right-click > explore. And it works perfectly. So we always do this maneuver.

a USB stick is indeed a removable drive.
As long as it works, we don't care about the name.

If you want to change its name, you'll need to manage the "autorun.inf" file inside it. Normally, it’s not there.

A USB key is a removable drive, always, without exception.
If it has been recognized as an internal drive, that is where it is abnormal. But I don't see the problem with it being recognized
as an external/removable drive, and I also don't understand why you bought another one.

Hello, I also have a USB key that is recognized as a removable disk but as a card reader!!! So it's not accessible, still the same request for a disk on 5 different computers!!!

Same. For me. I have a 4 GB mini SD storage card for my HTC mobile and a USB adapter to read it on my PC (recognized as a removable disk): I've tried all the PCs! I get the same message: insert a disk into drive O:

impossible to access the directory and find my files: video, audio, work documents, etc.!

Re hello! I think I have the solution: you need to format the SD card or your stuff with Windows (which will destroy all your data, sorry) To do this, right-click on the removable disk and select "format," and make sure to do a full format. Normally, Windows should recognize the removable disk.  Try first with another removable disk that you don’t care about or one that has no important data on it to let everyone know if it works, then, if that’s the case, you can format the other removable disks and inform the people here about the success of the operation. If it doesn’t work, don’t format the other removable disks.  Warning: I did not say to format your hard drive, but your removable disk.  Good luck. ;-) Musically, DJ Fire-Black...Call me ... Or uninstall the USB key using "devmgmt.msc" and then plug it back into the port. Without data loss.

Shadow, what do you mean by devmgmt.msc? It is completely impossible to format the removable disk. It always says "insert a disk and try again."

Go to the manufacturer's website of your USB key.

They have a great tool that detects your key (as long as your USB port is functioning normally and is active because if you clicked on "safely remove hardware" even while leaving the key in the port, the tool will say it found nothing and will ask you to plug it back in).
It asked me what the capacity of the key was: I chose 32 Gb.
I had to decide between "Format and erase data" or "Format and keep data".
I chose to keep the data.
It formatted and asked me to click on EXIT and remove the device.
I then re-plugged my key and it was recognized as TRANSCEND:\ with all my files in FAT32.
The question is where did the problem come from?
1) I had plugged my key in and then I turned off my computer and finally removed my key => not good?
2) I might have put files from FAT32 and NTFS systems => not good?
3) the first time it was recognized as a removable disk instead of TRANSCEND was on my brother's PC which doesn't have WinXP like mine but has Win7 => not good?
4) he plugged it into a USB port located on his keyboard => not good?
