WinRAR issue Solved

Question

Hello,
everyone
I've been trying to extract a 6 GB WinRAR archive for 2 days, but at 39% I get an error message "insufficient disk space"
even though I have 50 GB left on the destination disk
after some research online, I noticed that this might be due to the hard drive format, but I'm using NTFS...

hoping that someone can help me

Do you have an idea about the compression rate, that is, the size the archive will have once decompressed?

Keep in mind that WinRAR, when it comes to large volumes, first decompresses to the temporary folder of Windows and then transfers.

So you need to have space on both the source and destination drives.

And if it's the same drive, you need to have twice the volume of the decompressed size.

It's very possible that your winrar archive is corrupted... if you can get another one and give it a try, it might give us a clue...

Hello, is it an archive of a single file? I believe the size limit is 4 GB on NTFS If not, check your disk, there may be some errors.  Do today what you didn't do yesterday:

so:
to begin with, I unzip on another hard drive of course, but when I try on the one where the archive is, it doesn't work either

then regarding the format of the hard drive, according to all the pages I've found on the internet, it's FAT32 that doesn't handle files larger than 4GB

finally, I do think it's a temporary file issue because when I extract, my free space on C: (my partition with Windows) decreases over time

So, is there a way to put temporary files on another partition or another drive?

Here you go, problem solved  turns out it was indeed my version of WinRAR that was causing the issue...  I got a new one and it worked perfectly   so thank you for your help

Hello,
I have a CD with a compressed rar file that contains an mdf file of over 4GB. I am trying to transfer it to my hard drive, which has more than 360GB of space, but when it reaches 95%, WinRAR stops and tells me that I do not have enough volume (insufficient space on the disk) and that there is a writing error (only the NTFS file system supports files larger than 4GB).
However, after reading the help articles, I have checked the sizes of my two hard drives and I have enough space. I can't find a solution and I am calling on your help as soon as possible... Thank you in advance.

I think it's because to decompress or reconstruct a split file, Windows uses a temp file located in C:. If you have a system partition smaller than the file to decompress, it will get blocked when the size exceeds that of your system partition. It's possible in options-path to set another directory for temporary files,... but for me it doesn't work, the program keeps hitting the size limit.

If it's just for decompression, use another program, like 7zip, which is free and very good.
If it's to reconstruct a chain of split files, then I have no solution.

I have the solution, taken from the WinRAR FAQ:
"If you do not want to use the temporary folder when extracting files, use the "Extract to" command in WinRAR's environment mode or the "Extract to" command in the archive context menu instead of "drag-and-drop"."

It worked!
