Here’s what you can do to solve your problem:

Check the previous tasks of the student:

Make sure you have completed all the tasks she gave you before the mast mission. For example, she may ask you to collect red insects (5 red insects found under an insect rock on her island) or other items. If you haven't completed these tasks, she won't give you the wooden leg.

Interact with the student:

Go back to the student and offer her your help again. Sometimes, the wooden leg is given after a specific dialogue or an interim task, like dyeing her shirt with red insects. Check if she mentions anything about a wooden leg or an axe.

Craft the heavy axe:

To craft the mast, you need a heavy axe, which requires a wooden leg, a vine, and an axe head. If the student hasn't given you the wooden leg yet, check if she offers it to you after completing a specific task, such as playing music with her (though this is more related to the metal mast).

Explore the island:

If you think you missed the wooden leg, explore the island where the student is located (usually the second island, Airplane Island). Sometimes, items like the wooden leg can be found by interacting with specific elements (for example, by cutting down coconut trees to obtain wooden legs, although in this case, the student is supposed to give it to you directly).

Check your inventory:

Make sure the wooden leg is not already in your inventory. Sometimes, players don’t notice that an item was received after a task.

Improve your relationship with the student:

If you’re having trouble progressing with her, try to improve your relationship by giving her gifts she likes (for example, bananas or tomatoes). A low social gauge can block certain interactions.

If you’re stuck:

If the student still won’t give you the wooden leg, it’s possible that you missed a step or there’s a bug. Try saving, restarting the game, and revisiting the student. Otherwise, focus on other tasks (like those from the cook or the farmer) to unlock other parts of the island, which can sometimes trigger missing events.

For the axe head, you will need to dig to find a flint and a large stone, then combine them at the workshop. The vine is often found while exploring the jungle or interacting with trees.
