    Hello,

    Credible lead:

==► The installation of updates KB5034763 and KB5034765 is failing

    Solutions:

Using Disk Cleanup tool, Manually deleting the $WinREAgent folder using File Explorer, Or running a command line: rmdir /S /Q C:\$WinREAgent (as administrator).

After deleting the $WinREAgent folder, you need to restart the update installation from the Settings menu > Windows Update.

    Folder $WinREAgent

From the File Explorer, open the drive where Windows is installed (C: by default).

Then click on the View > Show > Hidden items tab.

The $WinREAgent folder will then appear first.

Select it and delete it. (If present !!!).

(four hours ago) CCM released an identical post.

     https://www.commentcamarche.net/informatique/windows/30301-patch-tuesday-fevrier-2024-bugs/

    In the CCM post:

run the command line rmdir /S /Q C:\$WinREAgent in a command prompt (as administrator).

Also valid by typing in the search field on the taskbar =► terminal.

To be opened as Administrator with a right-click, which will open Powershell.

    And do a copy-paste :

     rmdir /S /Q C:\$WinREAgent

    Then press enter.

    Restart the PC afterwards.

    Resume Windows Update.

      Hello,

What it tells us about what it's supposed to "improve" (including trying to impose Copilot on those who don't want it), but aside from "usual" causes (lack of space, Windows Update corruption or disk...), it doesn't specify what specific bug it would suffer from during installation.

Mine is scheduled for tonight, Wait and See.

    Hello,

mine was installed this morning without any issues.

To test it, I uninstalled it normally and reinstalled it, then uninstalled and installed again via the command line. It takes a bit longer. But everything is fine on my side.

    Hello,

Same for one of my neighbors this very morning!

I've had it up to here with having to help him out every time and losing a morning.

The culprit seen at the neighbor's:

I had to fix the browser that was preventing the update.

A Youtube video wonderfully explains the procedure when you don't know anything about

      Windows.

        Hello,

This means, in Microsoft's deplorable habit, that Edge must be operational even though another browser is set as default?

Have you tried clearing the Windows Update cache?

Open CMD as an administrator and:

echo Stopping Windows Update services net stop wuauserv net stop cryptSvc net stop bits net stop msiserver net stop dosvc C: ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old echo Starting Windows Update services net start dosvc net start msiserver net start bits net start cryptsvc net start wuauserv

      Hello,

                                                               *******

Exactly Brucine, because Microsoft Edge needs the Windows Web Experience Pack which, among other things, manages the Widgets in W11 (the same goes for W10). As soon as you uninstall (or improperly uninstall) one of the two, it conflicts with Windows Update.

                                                             ******

Long planned in a future cumulative update, there will be an option to uninstall Edge.

We just need to check what behavior Windows Update will have, but if proposed by Microsoft, I believe it will be a partial uninstallation likely sufficient to avoid conflict with Windows Update.

                                                            ********

I had set out this morning to install the update in standalone mode, without success of course (Update Catalog) and it was while checking the updates of the browsers that Edge had disappeared.

      Well, charming...

It seems to me that I read somewhere that in a certain (?) future Windows would no longer force the use of Edge, including in the Windows internal help menus; Microsoft is indeed under scrutiny as it was in the past for forcing the use of IE.

So, it's been a long time since I gave up trying to uninstall it; I just settled for blocking its services and update tasks, resources wasted unnecessarily; we’ll see what tomorrow brings.

In any case, the new version of Mail (Outlook) is a trap; if you search a bit on the Web, you will understand that currently Crosoft is trying to synchronize your accounts (Gmail for example). Some say that by retrieving your accounts with your emails, they know your data, so it's better to use another more confidential messaging service, especially now that hackers have hacked FREE, the Crédit Agricole, Pôle emploi, and the mutual insurance companies, and recently the CAF.

As for FREE, I receive calls from unknown numbers without answering of course, but they got my messaging with fake messages like a fake France Connect, worse than my CCM messaging, and I report the source code of my messages on the signal spam site; the last one of this kind was over 3 years ago.

                                                            *****

Windows future would no longer force the use of Edge

Yet you are forced to open the Widget links with Edge, even though at one point I suggested a workaround on this forum to open them with Firefox for example.

The .eml links also by default open with Edge, easy to change, but still, you can see that Edge is sticking to your heels!

Mail/Outlook, I've never used it, and I'm not going to start now, too bad for Microsoft's business.

The same goes for Widgets, I like to keep my desktop "clean," and Open Shell disregards them.

Windows internal links have a specific URL format that is precisely designed to be opened only by Edge, even if a related registry setting is changed (and it takes the opportunity to bombard us with Bing).

As for eml files, I have no reason to have them under these conditions, but my email client opens them if needed without any special tweaking since Mail/Outlook isn’t installed and therefore not default.

But it is true that Windows has regrettable behaviors, with Edge being just the tip of the iceberg.

      Hello,

      This update went smoothly.

After disabling Widgets to start with Regedit

      Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

      [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Dsh]
      "IsPrelaunchEnabled"=dword:00000000

I had uninstalled it using PowerShell

      Get-AppxPackage *WebExperience* | Remove-AppxPackage
