Install a browser

Hello,
I reinstalled Windows on my old computer (which still works well). It is the XP Home Edition version.
I connected to the network with a wireless USB adapter (successfully).
But I can't connect because Windows XP provides Internet Explorer (which is no longer functional).
I put on a USB key Google Chrome, Opera that I had downloaded on my other computer, but I can't install these browsers.
What should I do? Thanks for your answers

Hello,
We should try the latest Firefox version compatible with XP and Vista ESR 52.9, which, even if it doesn't offer all current possibilities, is still usable on many sites (but not all): http://archive.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/52.9.0esr/win32-sha1/fr/ download the .exe and run it.
Also remember to install SP3 if the installed XP version is not at that level.

Thanks a lot, it worked.
By the way I have SP2. Is it worth installing SP3? Is it still possible? Or even switch to Windows 7 or 10 (that’s asking a lot from me :)) -
XP SP3: https://www.microsoft.com/fr-FR/download/details.aspx?id=55245
W7 or W10, a license is required, but you can find one for 1€
The question is whether the PC will be able to keep up. Most cannot. I have a 15/20-year-old PC that originally ran XP. I upgraded it to W7 and W10; it works, for web browsing or office tasks it is enough. But originally it was a very powerful PC, with 4GB of memory and a 7200rpm hard drive.

Hi everyone, this is Cdbvs

Hi Philbert29,
Hi to the others ^^,
.
With Mozilla Firefox 52.9.0 ESR, the last browser to be updated is MyPal 29.3.0 on September 15, 2021.
There are many sites that no longer work because of the end of the "IdentTrust DST Root CA X3" certificate and there are also many browsers that no longer work. Maxthon mx 5.3.8.2100 and Yandex 17.4.1.1026 still work, for example. http works, no need to have https.
.
If these installations work, it's because your PC has an SSE2 or newer instruction. If it doesn't work, it's because your PC has an SSE1 instruction. You'll need to say so so we can give you other browsers.
.
Know that you should not use the Internet today on Win XP; there are too many risks. Your bank, PayPal, your email, etc. should be on at least Win 10.
.
It's better to move to SP4 because SP2 is too old. There is SP3 and SP4. SP4 installs as if it were SP3 but it's actually SP4. If you need it, we’ll provide links.
The latest security update dates from 2019 if I'm not mistaken; it's KB4500331. It prevents a hacker from taking control of the victim's PC by sharing online.
.
For information, the most powerful HDDs under Win XP are at most 2 TB; after that Windows doesn't detect them.
.
Upgrading to Win7 was automatic if you updated the last Windows XP update. We’ll have to see with other folks who know more about this problem than I do.
.
There you go.
See you soon.

Hello,
I’m not sure that SP3 or SP4 (unofficial) are relevant if the PC works as expected; security flaws will be about the same. We can limit the scope by using an appropriate firewall and by avoiding browsing on sensitive sites due to data exposure (banks, which it isn’t certain we can connect to under XP) or security (cracks, p2p, sites of Q...).
I don’t recall there having been one, but it is certain that to this day XP SP whatever you want will not update to Windows 7 and anyway, as mentioned above, it isn’t the cost that is at issue.

Thank you for this proposal, but to go to this link I would need a browser open. None is installed (except for Internet Explorer).
That’s exactly my problem.

thanks for the information. I might try it. I have 3.25GB of RAM. That doesn’t seem too bad to me.
