Well, private messages won't remain visible to the other user if one of the members of the chat no longer exists.
Personally, one of the chats has already disappeared because the user I was talking to left for good.
The data will still be on the site but not visible.

In any case, the people who were connected while you were there will continue to see your messages as long as they remain connected, I think.

Cookies... they store data in your browser... it doesn’t change anything about what has been sent to the server...
And on the server... if the messages are stored in a database... well... they stay there until an admin deletes them... (or if there’s an automatic cleanup script scheduled once a month for example... who knows...)
