If the symbol "in the base zone" is flashing three possibilities:
- The handset is too far from the base. ==> Move it closer.
- The power adapter of the base is poorly connected. ==> Reconnect the power adapter to the base.
- The handset is not registered to the base. ==> Register it
The procedure below (click on it to enlarge)
I have tried it but it doesn't always work.

KX-161EX? The reference seems incomplete, is it not KX-1611ex?
So, it is the antenna-shaped icon that is blinking on the handset's screen
Are you sure the base's power supply is working properly?
Did you follow the procedure for registering a handset on the base as described on page 29 of the manual?
Is your pin code still the original one: 0000?
