Hello,

Am I allowed to use a copyrighted image on a thumbnail? If not, what are the risks I face?

    Hello

Regardless of whether your question is legal and not technical and that it has already been asked, the answer is:
    No.
Any image protected by copyright is by definition protected from any use without payment or authorization from the author.

What you risk, often a complaint and a requirement to "remove the image", at worst a criminal prosecution + fines that can add up.

Now, if the purpose is to "share" with friends in a restricted setting, you won't risk much other than the 1.
However, if it's a "commercial" use aimed at obtaining personal profit or income, either directly (monetization) or indirectly (promotion or otherwise), then yes, you risk more serious problems.

    Best regards
