I want to create a slideshow for my 12-year-old son’s presentation. I am using Microsoft Word. Do I need to download software for that? If so, which free software do you recommend?

Word is not made for creating slideshows. Since you have Word, you probably also have PowerPoint. It's PowerPoint that you need to use.
If you don't have PowerPoint, you can download (for free) LibreOffice and use Impress, which is the desktop publishing software for creating slideshows.
