Hello,

I bought the Samsung SE-506 Blu-ray/DVD drive today. After reading the manual (very complicated), I connected the drive to my Mac. And then... nothing, well, it reacts but the Mac doesn't recognize it, impossible to find it in Disk Utility. I tried inserting a Blu-ray, a regular DVD, but nothing works, I can't use it! Is there any driver that needs to be installed?

Thank you and have a nice day

Configuration: Mac OS X Mountain Lion (10.8) / Firefox 37.0

    Hello,

Apparently, no driver is needed, it should be recognized according to this reading "Recognized without a driver by MAC OS X. The only complaint is that there is no Blu-ray reader software for Mac."

So, regarding reading and burning CDs and DVDs, there should be no problem.

In the system information/USB, do you see it?
Have you repaired the permissions? Unplugged and re-plugged the drive?
What type of Mac is it connected to and what type of USB port? Not one from a keyboard, which lacks power.
In the Finder preferences, are the media checked to be visible on the desktop?

      Thank you for your response!

So, I unplugged and plugged it back in several times and miracle, it is recognized in Disk Utility! It’s a 21.5" iMac from 2012, connected to one of the rear USB ports (I changed ports several times to try).
So even though it recognized it, the issues continue! I can't do anything! I put in a random DVD and launched the Mac "DVD Player," which doesn’t read the disc, same goes for VLC! I tried an audio CD, the tracks display fine but VLC and iTunes crash, I don’t know what to do! I downloaded the trial version of the Blu-ray player for Mac, and it reads the Blu-ray well but it’s extremely choppy and therefore not watchable!
Thanks again, I don’t know if I’m still very clear ^^

I understand well, but as requested, have you repaired the permissions? I assume you know how to do it:
      To repair permissions
Folder Applications/Utilities/disk utility/select the disk (HD) menu First Aid/Repair..... and let it run.
After inserting a disk into the drive, does it mount on the desktop?
Another thing, how much memory do you have?
Do you regularly run a utility like Onyx? just in case:

You need to download Onyx according to your OS, here:

      http://www.titanium.free.fr/download.php ,

      After installation
      Launch Onyx
-Let it check the SMART status of the hard drive and the volume structure (note: this operation cannot be performed if the hard drive is not journaled)
-then give it the password when it asks
-then click on the "Automation" button?
-check all the boxes except "Show contents of folders"
      -click on "Execute"
      -Restart the Mac

So your internal drive is dead if you bought an external drive? are you sure? a friend, on an iMac from 2010 or 2011, had a drive that wouldn't read or burn anymore, I had him buy an external drive, a Samsung too, and using it revived his internal one ;-)
Have you tried using a burning software, like Toast or another free one?
