Hello,
I have a MacBook Air running OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5) and recently when I connect my external hard drive, this message appears on the screen: “The disk you inserted is not readable by this computer” with the options (Initialize… Ignore… Eject…).
As a novice in computing, I don’t really understand Disk Utility and I’m afraid of making mistakes...
Can you help me?? Will I lose all the data on my hard drive?? ..
Thank you in advance Joanna.

Restart the Mac and hold down cmd (Apple) + alt + r to start internet recovery.
2-Select the Wi-Fi network and enter the code (be careful as the keyboard is set to default. For example, the letter "m" will be at the question mark position).
3-Launch the utility (which is actually the original one installed on the Mac).
4-Start the verification and repair of the damaged disk.
Done!
