How to back up my files online using cloud services

Hello everyone,

I'm not sure if I'm in the right forum or if my title is very explicit, but my request is a bit complex.

I'm a PhD student and I'm looking for a way to back up my work documents on different online storage platforms (box, dropbox, googledrive, hubic, etc. it doesn't matter) without the files being able to sync in the other direction.

What I would like is to be able to work normally on my (my) file(s) stored locally on my PC, and then launch a software (or a protocol) to sync the modified file(s) online.

Since my work is more than precious to me, I would like to save it on more than one platform, at least two (in case one has a problem or decides to close my account), so I can't work on a file stored in the sync folder of the service but in my local documents.

On the other hand, since I often work on many files at once (also large ones) and I have a small disk (128GB SSD), I can't afford to copy my work documents into the sync folders each time for them to sync.

Basically, what I would like is a way to launch an online backup of certain folders and have it account for different versions of the files, keeping only the most recent ones (a bit like time capsule but online).

I hope I've managed to be clear, and I hope you can help me.
Thank you all in advance, and I wish you an excellent weekend,
Thanks
Bastien

Good evening everyone,

After a little over a year, the solution has just been provided to me by OVH and its HUBIC service.

Hubic has indeed just launched an archiving option along with version management. The option is still in beta and therefore currently only works with the beta version of their application.

For those interested, you will find all the information here:
https://forums.hubic.com/showthread.php?3843-La-fonction-d-archivage-fait-son-apparition-sur-hubiC-

For now, I've tested it and it works very well. Plus, the initial storage is quite substantial, and the cost of additional storage is very low!

So, my problem is resolved.

Thank you very much to JB for his help and patience.

Hello,

You can use Dropbox + Google Drive

With these softwares you can choose the folders to sync and the synchronizations happen in the background. We're talking about synchronization and not backup, so if you access your files from another computer, the changes made will be automatically reflected.

I believe Microsoft Sky Drive also allows this

Otherwise, you can use a software like SyncBack Pro which supports version management in its backups and supports services like Amazon Cloud

Best regards,

Hello,

Thank you very much for your response (so quick).

If I use these services, am I at risk of having my files deleted overnight due to a mistake? I had a bad experience with my friend's computer, after which Dropbox replaced all files with older versions.
On another note, would I be able to sync a folder with both services at the same time (in this case, Google Drive and another, like Skydrive, for example)?

As for Dropbox, I need to forget it because the storage space is too small (but I have plenty of space on Hubic, Boc, Skydrive, and Google Drive).

SyncBack seems ideal to me, but I wanted to go for a free solution, and as far as I know, Amazon Cloud is not.

Thank you for your help,
Best regards

Indeed, Amazon Cloud is paid. SyncBack also supports Google Cloud and Azure (Microsoft), but in any case, the basic tools provided are for synchronization, not backups, and the risk remains a bit.
Another solution (which also works with SyncBack, which I like, no, I don't have any shares) is FTP, and Free, for example, offers a lot of GB to its subscribers.

Hello,

I am truly sorry for taking SO long to respond but I got overwhelmed with urgent tasks... But thank you very much for your help!

So I’m coming back to my initial project of online backup!
Indeed, my project is still to back up (an incremental backup if I'm not mistaken) not to synchronize.

I’m with Free, so if Syncback pro can work like that, I’d be happy to boost your stocks ;) . How should I proceed?

As for Dropbox, I just managed to increase my space, so if we can do something other than synchronization, I’m open to that solution. Otherwise, as I mentioned, I have plenty of space on Hubic, Box, Onedrive (formerly Skydrive), and Google Drive.

Thanks again,
Have a great day.

Good evening,

Dropbox and the like are primarily about syncing, not incremental backups.

So to back up to FTP, the free version of SyncBack will be sufficient (available at https://www.2brightsparks.com/syncback/syncback-hub.html )

Then you just need to create a backup profile, set the FTP as the target, and configure it to never delete files. If you need to keep multiple versions of a file, you'll have to upgrade to the paid SE version.

Best regards,
