Can you transfer files with VNC?

Hello,
I'm using VNC to control my desktop PC from my laptop. Is it possible to copy files from my desktop PC to my laptop using VNC? Or is there another software that allows this?
I tried to listen to music from my desktop PC on my laptop, but it didn't work.

I would also like to know if I can control my desktop PC when I take my laptop to someone else's place, but it won't be connected to the Internet (only my desktop PC will be at home connected via an Alice ADSL box).

Please help me.
