It really smells like trolling here, and the only nonsense I've read here is yours, AlBaTor.

The interest of public encryption methods (and therefore by extension the one used by OpenOffice) is that they are put to the test to verify that they are hard to break. History has shown that "personal" encryption algorithms are not reliable.

Moreover, just so you know, just having the encryption algorithm does not mean you can find a password like that: encryption methods are based on so-called one-way mathematical functions, which means you cannot retrieve the password from the encrypted document, even if you know the encryption algorithm used.

In the end, open-source software is much more reliable than its proprietary counterparts, because everyone can take an interest in how it works, and thus identify and fix security flaws much more quickly.

So it's been 7 years that I've been working with a piece of crap software, really!!!!

I don't remember any recent bugs, and what does "quality of the documents provided..." mean?

And on top of that, I can open the Word, Excel, and PPT files that are sent to me by email. (I don't have Microsoft Office installed on my PCs).

So, for me, I don't see what the problem is.

Like with MSOFFICE, you have for OpenOffice:

You take your file and convert it to Excel
then you open it in Excel, remove the protection from the protected sheets
you save it still in Excel
and finally, you open it in OpenOffice and save it as ODS
you close it
and you open it with OpenOffice
there you go

Me too, I've been working with a crappy software for 2 years and I never realized it! I migrated to Open Office because I couldn't afford the other software suites and I was not disappointed. Even though at first I was quite taken aback, after a while I learned how to use this software that perfectly meets my needs. Just because a software doesn't have a ton of super advanced functions that 99% of people never use doesn't mean Open Office is crappy software. Version 2.3 is very good and has fixed many, albeit very minor, compatibility bugs, by the way.

If you have some programming knowledge, you can get the Open Office source and you'll know how the password is encrypted.

That's the problem with Open Source software... No confidentiality of the produced documents can be guaranteed...

For me, Open Office, besides not being user-friendly and flexible, does not guarantee confidentiality...

For now, it's a popular product for its free-ness... that can't last!
