Remove a program from the context menu

Modify the context menu (right-click)

1. Open any folder
2. Click Tools, then Folder Options…
3. Click the File types tab
4. Select the document type whose context menu is “polluted” and click on

Advanced
5. Select the faulty command, click Delete and OK.

Note: If it’s a folder, this becomes harder. Indeed, Windows protects the context menu

for folders from modifications.

As you can see, the Modify… and Delete buttons are inaccessible. To bypass

this protection, open the registry (Start > Run > regedit). Look for the

key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder and open the value EditFlag

copy the current value to a corner; it will be handy a little later, now

you can replace it with ‘02 00 00 00’ (modify binary value with right-click)

click OK and exit Regedit.

Restart your computer… You can now modify the folder context menu

(these are the first two icons representing folders and having no extension,

For safety, restore the old key and restart your
computer.

There you go!

For WinRAR it's easier:
1_Options
2_Settings
3_Integration
4_Context menu items
Then you can choose which item you will keep or remove
It's the same solution in the settings for 7zip as well
For VLC Media Player I will show you another solution:
1_Start+R
2_Type Regedit
3_CTRL+F
4_Check data in (look in)
5_Type what is integrated into VLC's context menu (e.g., open with VLC Media Player)
6_Run the search
7_delete the key you will find

Hello, I don’t know if this is in the context menu but I can’t remove MICROSOFT OFFICE from the Control Panel. Impossible, I’ve tried REGEDIT and looked for Office then deleted the Office folders but nothing works???? Still impossible to remove it from the Control Panel, it shows 153 MB MICROSOFT OFFICE HOME AND STUDENT 2007. When I right-click to uninstall, nothing happens. Do you have a solution?

Hello, you should consider checking the date of messages before posting, to remove items from the control panel. I recommend the freeware TweakUI 2.10 that you can download at the following address: http://www.ndfr.net/telechargements/tweak-ui-2-10-30.html

Hello everyone,

Looking to clean up my context menu, I followed the explained procedure. It works for some programs but not all, notably for those that “pollute” the context menu of folders, and even more so for the entire set of files.

The affected programs are:
- WinRAR
- 7-Zip (uninstalled though!)
- VLC player.

I have tried numerous tricks but nothing works. Additionally, I tried with cleaning tools like Easy Cleaner, etc.

Are there any documents or a site that explains how the Windows XP registry works, in particular the meaning of the "EditFlags" value (for example, replacing for the "Folder" key "D2 03 00 00" with "02 00 00 00" to make the "Edit" and "Delete" buttons active)?
