I'm looking for a song that my grandmother used to sing a long time ago... Here are the lyrics, I don't know the title, if you could help me, I would be very happy. Thank you in advance:
There, beneath the shade of the thick trees, rises a dull noise, a confused murmur. The flame lights up with red reflections, dark figures, dark preparations.
It's a whole swarm of wandering bohemians, with eyes full of sparks, with flowing hair, originating from Egypt, a distant shore, bronzed by the ardor of the African sun and around the glowing hearth, the men are gathered, the women are setting the dinner table and pouring wine into black clay pots. Songs and ballads circulate in a circle, they sing of Spain and its fertile soil. Laughter carries the merry dancers to the sound of guitars and tambourines. Alas, fatigue has just stopped them. The leaves cradle them with their light noise. A dream makes them find their homeland. They happily dream of their beautiful paradise. The mule's foot beats the earth with a loud noise...

Hello!
Perhaps you found this in the meantime... It's a song we're currently learning with our choir: it's a piece by Robert Schumann entitled The Gypsies. We are using a two-part score (sopranos and tenors on one side and altos and basses on the other). In some parts of the song, the two groups respond to each other: not all the text is common. If you are interested in that detail, it would be easier over email.
The Gypsies
Over there, beneath the shade of thick trees
A dull sound rises, a confused murmur
The flame illuminates red reflections
Of dark figures, of strange preparations
It's a whole swarm of wandering Bohemians
With eyes full of lightning, with flowing hair
From Egypt, a distant shore
Tanned by the heat of the African sun
Around the hearth Near the fire
The men are gathered, The women, the women prepare the evening table
And pour the wine into black clay pots
Songs and ballads circulate in a circle
They sing of Spain and its fertile soil
The matriarch rises and secretly reveals
The magical potions to the silent group
The rhythms entice the joyous dancers
The torches cast their red glows
To the sound of guitars and tambourines
Everyone leaps full of joy and spirit
Yet fatigue comes to stop them
The leaves lull them with their light sound
A dream makes them find their homeland, they happily dream of their beautiful paradise
A dream makes them find their homeland, they happily dream of their beautiful paradise
But dawn appears, its luminous brightness
Dispels and drives away all these joyful dreams
The mule stomps the ground loudly
They leave, going where God leads them (3x)
Where God leads them -
Around the hearth that glows, I learned when I attended St. Etienne's physical education... I was born in... 1925!
