How to lock desktop icons??? Solved/Closed

Hello,

I just bought a new computer and I'm discovering Windows 7. One particularly ANNOYING thing turns out to be even worse on Windows 7 than on XP:
every time I install a new program, all my desktop icons get messed up again, or rather they are arranged in an arbitrary order by Mr. Windows 7, which has nothing to do with the few minutes of effort I put into organizing them according to MY order! When it happens systematically, it quickly becomes frustrating!
So I've seen some posts, and I already tried right-clicking and unchecking "Auto arrange icons," but that doesn't do anything at all!
Anyway, does anyone know how to FORCE Windows 7 to maintain a desktop icon layout so that it doesn’t move anymore???

I admit that these little typical Windows imperfections will always surprise me: is it that difficult for Microsoft programmers, who are capable of very complex things in office applications, to lock the damn desktop icons? I just don’t get it...

Hello  Here's what works for me: right click on the desktop, click display, uncheck - auto-arrange... - and uncheck - align icons - then by dragging you put the icons wherever you want on the desktop: that's it! Make sure not to check either reorganize... or align. They will stay in place as long as you don't move them, but you can move them at any time. For me, every time I start the pc, they’re where I left them!

Good evening with the option: automatically rearrange icons: checked. if despite having checked this box the icons change places randomly, it is a bug in your system. b.c

And "Automatically arrange icons" was indeed checked at the start, which was pointless!!!

So, you’re telling me it’s a system bug, okay. But then, how to eliminate this bug????? Is there a manipulation to do in the registry?

Hi,

Well okay, I've checked the box again, but there is no "Apply" button with Windows 7 in this context menu, so we can't confirm anything!
And yes, the icons do automatically rearrange themselves, i.e., they shift to the left, but for example, if I pick one up, it will go to the last position, not at all to the position where I picked it up!
I realize that this checked box doesn't guarantee the placement of the icon at all!
Well, when I install a new program, I'll see what happens, but I have no illusions: what I believe I need is a "deep" manipulation to lock the arrangement of the icons, if such a thing exists!??
If anyone knows, I'm all ears!

Well, thank you both Youssef and Ekim because together you provided me with the solution!
By checking Automatic rearrangement and unchecking Snap to grid, the mix of the two means it won't move anymore!
I just verified by downloading a program, no changes.

It's a small thing, but it feels good to feel somewhat in control in my own place! :-)

Windows 7 is overall very good; it rarely crashes, but this flaw   is particularly annoying. You have to fight to get your icons where you want them; it’s crazy!
