difference between masked and unknown calls

I would like to know what the difference is between a masked call and an unknown call? Do all phones differentiate between the two?

A withheld call is a call whose number has been hidden. An unknown call is a call where the identity of the caller is unknown.

Normally, both imply the same idea: it is about a person calling you with their number hidden (an option they can choose on their phone). By default, the hidden number is therefore unknown. It depends on how your phone expresses it, but I remember having phones that said "private call," now I have a Nokia that shows "unknown," and ultimately it amounts to the same thing. The number calling you is traceable; no matter what you do, you can only hope that the person leaves you a message :)
