Hello, I can't change the welcome screen on Windows XP. I still have the old one where it asks for the username and password. I tried going to the control panel, then modifying the way users log on and off, I checked the option to use the welcome screen, then to use fast user switching, but nothing works!!!

    Hello Alizé;
    Try this formula

    On Windows XP, there are two types of welcome screens: either the Windows XP welcome screen or the Windows 2000 style screen.

    You can choose either one from the registry. To do this:

    * Click on Start, Run and then type regedit

    * Open: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon.

    * Then look for the LogonType key (if it doesn't exist, create it)

    * Finally, assign it the value 0 for Windows 2000 mode or 1 for Windows XP mode

    Thank you for your quick response. I tried what you sent me, but as a novice in computers, I got to Winlogon and then got stuck on editing the LogonType key.

      When you get to the Logon type key, right-click, then modify and set it to 1 (if this value is already set to 1, the problem lies elsewhere).

    Hello,

    Try this:
    Click on start / Run / Type: control userpasswords2 / Enter
    Click on your username and uncheck the box "Users must enter a username and password to use this computer" / Apply.

    Your advice was valuable to me, but even though I implemented it, my problem persists. I think I will have to reformat my computer.

      Before reformatting your PC, try performing a system restore in Safe Mode using a date prior to your issue.

    jmarion3, I did it, but it refuses any previous restoration. It attempts it, but when rebooting, it shows me that it couldn't be restored to that earlier date. I tried several dates but always got the same response.

    "Formatting" for so little... it wouldn't really be the best!
    And doing a system restore, one would still need to know if this issue just appeared, and wasn't present a few days/weeks ago? If this screen with a password at startup has existed for a long time, a restoration won't fix the issue!

    The safe mode has been successfully completed according to the instructions, not only does the problem persist but also on the startup page, I have a new message that appears with the warning symbol: "unable to log in because there is a account restriction."

      To delete the new message you have, redo a system restore in safe mode by setting the date and time to when you had only one message (basically, undo the last restore)
      Send me an image of your startup screen with the displayed messages

      Look at this
      Control Panel / User Accounts
      Change the way in which ......
      Check both boxes

    Thank you gaelle1 and jmarion3 for your valuable advice; I was able to restore the original settings.
    Now I have an error message that appears when I try to apply my screensaver (living aquarium2). I quote:
    Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
    Runtime Error
    This application has requested the runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. OK

    For the rest, everything is fine, and thank you again.

      2nd - For your screensaver, I suggest uninstalling it and using this one, and you won't regret it

      Ps: If you want to keep your old screensaver without messages, you need to install this because your software was designed with it, useful even for the one I suggested

    I performed several system restorations in safe mode on different dates
    and I finally managed to recover after 5 attempts.
    As for the screensaver you sent me, I couldn't install the key code since I don't understand English.
