HDCP (High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection), which can be translated into French as Protection des contenus numériques haute définition, is a specification designed to control audio and video streams traveling through HDMI interfaces and to protect them against copying.
If two devices are connected via an HDMI cable and one of them is not HDCP compliant, no audio or video signal will be received or transmitted.

  Thank you, and thanks to you my PS4 is working again for now.
  When I turned it on, I had sound but a black screen.
  By using another desktop monitor, I was able to get rid of
  HDCP, which I didn't even know existed.

the interest is of course not for you but for the "rights holders" who want to prevent illegal copying and for that the "digital" is well locked down and we haven't seen everything yet Hadopi and its ilk are rubbing their hands together

  Well, I repeat that it is possible. I have the Panasonic Blu-ray recorder and I record HD content in 5.1 and then transfer it onto a Blu-ray regardless of the source, and it is not locked by the HDCP chip, and I bought it in France legally and it has not been modified.

    Yes, that's normal. The broadcast signal of DTT terrestrial channels, therefore via an antenna, is not protected.

  There are certainly flaws, and I'm not here to defend the anti-piracy systems that ruin my life as well. All I can say or cite here is the result of my technical readings on various websites found on the Internet. What I can also say is that specialists are keeping a close eye, and many habits we've taken will disappear with digital technology. The HDCP protocol is well designed in this respect, where a device connected to another for playback via HDMI (like a player to a television, for example) requires a license or validation from the manufacturer (otherwise it won't play), and the HDMI connection won't occur. Moreover, if you read some of the other posts in the forum, you'll see that certain brands of TVs mentioned have serious firmware issues with the HDMI connection (green images, or unexplained sound dropouts, etc.)

  My Philips TV and my Panasonic are 4 months old. I record in HD 5.1 and transfer to Blu-ray in HD 5.1, and I play them on my TV in HD 5.1 without any problems and without installing any new firmware (I must be the only one, right? For once I’m lucky, I’m happy).

    You are not the only one; indeed, some splitters allow you to break HDCP security to make copies without any loss of quality and without any issues. Many buy a splitter solely for this purpose!
