Hello,
I downloaded the encryption software "lockdir" here => https://folder-protection.fr.softonic.com/
It works very, very well, I have nothing to say, it’s an excellent little software!
But here’s the thing, the other day, I made a mistake; I had a folder (on a USB key) protected by the software which I opened with the requested password. Then I removed the key without restoring the protection.
As a result, I no longer have anything in my folder, my folder is still on my USB key, but there’s nothing in it, everything has disappeared!
In this folder, I had several very important files, and I would really like to recover them if possible.
I know they’re still on the key because when I check the properties of my key, everything is the same as before in terms of used space and free space.
I should mention that when I go to: Tools ==> Folder Options ==> View ==> show hidden files and folders……………………Well, it doesn’t give me anything more, I still can’t see them.
Can you please help me?
Thank you in advance to everyone for your help

It's very easy to solve the problem:
you will copy the software again into the relevant folder, then you will lock the folder again, after unlocking you will find all the files you have lost... and there you go!

thank you, you are a boss
Try putting a file, an image, or maybe an mp3, that might unlock it. If that doesn't work, try saving it on your computer, putting it in the recycle bin, and restoring it. If that works and if not, sorry, I don't see anything else.
Hello Corsicazaki and thank you for coming to my aid
So I've done everything you told me, but nothing works, I can't find my files!
And regarding moving it to my PC and putting it in the trash to restore it later, I can't do that because it is still protected.
That is to say, I can't copy, cut, or delete this folder because even if I can't see my files anymore, it is still well protected by "Lockdir"
There you go, I really don't know what to do now.
Thanks again

Hi Th!erry,
Before I dive deeper into your problem, have you simply tried renaming it or copying it? Maybe also "save as" another extension.
For the latter case => My Documents => Tools => Folder Options => View => uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types"
See you later

Good evening Hubert
And a big thank you for responding "Present"
So regarding renaming it, no problem, I can rename it without issue (that’s really the only thing we can do with a folder protected by Lockdir, by the way).
As for copying it, that’s impossible because as I mentioned in post No. 4, I can neither copy, cut, nor delete this folder because even if I can no longer see my files, it is still well protected by "Lockdir".
And to save it under a different extension, it’s a folder, and a folder doesn’t have an extension like a Word file (.doc), or other .jpg, .bmp, .mp3 etc.……
So there it is, I have a folder that I can neither delete, nor copy, nor cut with nothing visible inside, and yet the files are indeed there, that’s for sure.
I can’t be the first one this has happened to, because I made the mistake of removing my USB drive without restoring the protection, but the same thing would have happened with a power outage for example (it’s like removing the key without restoring the protection).
Thanks again

The documents you received, what type are they? Which software can you open them with, for example a doc of course
or maybe you connect your USB stick, go to My Computer = Local Disk = Documents and Settings = All Users = Shared Documents, try that or eventually you go to Start, Search, select the type of doc you are looking for, enter the name and specify where it should search, hoping it works.

Hello Thierry,
A silly question, I suppose you used the option => Protection => Cancel protected (C) as indicated HERE when you click on the "Protection" box

Hello Hubert
I don’t quite understand when you say ==>>I assume you used the option => Protection => Cancel protected (C) as indicated HERE when you click on the "Protection" box
Actually (I don’t know if you have tried this little software which is really great, by the way).
But when I want to protect a folder, I left-click on it (twice), and I choose the middle box "Protect Another" and then a window opens, and I choose the destination of the folder I want to protect, whether it’s on a USB stick or on my computer.
Then I enter my password, and I click on "Protect" and there you go, the folder is protected.
If I click on "Cancel protected (C)" I cancel everything, and the folder is not protected, it’s as if I hadn’t done anything.
I don’t know if I was very clear in my little explanations. If not, feel free to ask me for details if you need.
Thank you
Thierry

Hi Thierry,
I've never used this software.
What I wanted to say is: did you connect your USB stick to the PC and then follow the instructions to "unlock" the folder and then try to open it? If it doesn't work, you can then try to "relock" it, you never know.
P.S.: by clicking on the link, and on the "frame" in question, they provide a 4-step guide that involves a WinRar file (lockdir.exe)
See you later

Re Hubert
Yes, I did use the procedure to "unprotect" my file, and that allowed me to access it, and I could see all my files inside. It's when I removed the key without "restoring" the protection that everything disappeared.
And I did try to "reprotect" it again, but it doesn't work, it says "protection failed." Probably because it's still protected, I suppose.
Ps: however, for me it's not quite the same as in your link to protect a folder, I don't have 4 steps, it's really very simple, I choose a folder, I enter a code, and I click on "protect" and that's it, I don't need to go through a "Winrar" file.
Try it, you'll see, it's super easy to use.
Thanks
Thierry

Hi Thierry,
What if you tried following the path indicated in the demo?
Who knows, the mysteries of computing...

Regarding Hubert
I would like to, but it’s too late now, it’s done, it’s protected, I can’t go back.
If it were the first time, yes I could follow like in the demo, but now, it’s impossible, there’s nothing to gain from it for now. I need to "unprotect" it to do what’s shown in the demo.
Good evening Hubert
Thank you

Bad news, my friend,
this system is designed in such a way that if you don't follow the correct procedure, you lose everything!!
It's a matter of security!!!
If you have a chance left, it's on the side of data recovery software (not necessarily free)!!
Otherwise.....tears will be your only option!!

I apologize, "my friend," but I completely disagree with you; I know very well that there is a solution.
First of all, knowing that we can recover files even after formatting a hard drive or USB stick, etc…
So I’m sure that there is a solution to recover these files.
And I agree that I did not follow the correct procedure, but what about power outages or other issues that can happen at any moment and could cause the same problem as mine?
Does everyone lose their files then? No, I don't believe that for a second. They are definitely on the USB, and I fully intend to recover them one day or another.

Impossible, and I'm going to tell you why: I can view my photos through a DVD player that has a USB input, so I know my files are intact.
What’s not quite normal, by the way, is that I can no longer access them from a PC, but from a simple DVD player that supports .Bmp and .Jpeg images, it works, so it doesn't really protect the photos well, though everything else, Word, Excel, the DVD player cannot read.
Have a good evening
Thank you
Thierry

Exactly again except......you shouldn't compare a PC and a player!!!
The player shows you images because it is not designed for encoding, the PC reacts differently; if you input encoding parameters, they are saved in the registry and each time it encounters a corresponding file, it reacts, normal!!!

Hello Thierry
I also had a little issue with Lockdir. After temporarily unprotecting my folder instead of permanently (I pressed the "enter" key too quickly), I was unable to manipulate my folder (copy, cut, delete). It apparently was no longer protected (the little padlock icon no longer appeared on the folder), but an error message indicated that I couldn't copy it because it was still open in Lockdir.
After re-protecting and unprotecting my folder again with Lockdir, I still couldn't use it.
So I went to the task manager and in the list of processes, I ended "Lockdir.exe". After this maneuver, I was able to copy my folder.
I hope this will help you.

1-Personal note... oh the photos....in the worst case, put it into perspective, I have a friend who lost his son's photos since birth (5 years of jpeg...)
2-The "encryption" software is a pain. In the future, I recommend not using it...
3-I don't have any more knowledge on this, but have you tried burning them from a DVD player since you say they are readable from it? (if the DVD player has that option)
4-You can try a live CD Linux
Knoppix is pretty good.
https://www.commentcamarche.net/faq/4883-knoppix-utiliser-knoppix-comme-cd-de-secours
Basically, it's an OS that allows you to boot your PC (without touching Windows), you plug in the USB drive and see if you can view/access copy the data
5-Uninstall your encryption software, logically this should remove the protections everywhere.

So I haven't tried to burn the photos onto a CD for the simple reason that I only have a DVD/DVIX player, but I can't burn with it.

-no, you create a CD, you boot the computer from it, which opens a graphical interface that allows you to see if you can recover the data, then you exit the graphical interface, the PC restarts, you remove the CD and you go back to Windows as if nothing happened
-start > control panel > add remove programs....
attention, I will reserve that as a last resort... you never know, make sure to back up your protected data first....

I don't see at all where the "encryption software" is in "add/remove programs"?
I'm going to start with this solution, because I have 3 PCs at home, one of which is an old one that I hardly use anymore except for experimental purposes, so I don't have much to lose on it anyway.
The other 2, it's clear, I won't do it if you don't recommend it.
When you say to make a copy of my protected data beforehand, you mean the various documents I have in there, I suppose?
But then, will I need to put the "encryption software" back on?
Thank you
Thierry

your encryption software that you mentioned yourself
I downloaded the encryption software "lockdir" here => https://folder-protection.fr.softonic.com/
you delete it, but before, you open your pretty folders that you protected with it (except for the one that crashes of course) and you remove the protection to avoid causing any further damage

Now, I don't understand anything at all, you told me in post No. 28 to go to "start > control panel > add or remove programs"....It's not a software that installs with the other programs, it's not mentioned at all.
Otherwise, I did as you told me, I deleted it from the PC and inserted my USB stick, but unfortunately, it changes nothing at all whether I deleted it from the PC or not, it's just like before actually.
I must have missed something in your explanation I think, but I don't see what.

ok, I didn't use the program, if it didn't install that's all the better.
ok, so we'll try the live CD solution
in the doc I sent you, follow points 1 & 2
After that, plug your USB drive into the computer, an icon will appear on the desktop, double-click on it, check if your files are accessible, if so, copy them to another location on your USB drive, or to another USB drive/external disk.

Hello Xavstarblues
I have a big problem, I'm stuck right at the beginning, that is to say here => Download and burn a Knoppix CD
I don't know where to go next, I went to the "official French site," because "quick link" the page is outdated.
So I don't know how to proceed, if you could shed some light on this it would really help me out, because right now I'm completely stuck.
Thanks

Thank you for your link Xavstarblues,
The file is quite large, it's 688 MB, do you think a 700 MB CD-R will be enough for what comes next?
If not, after creating the ISO image, it's not just a matter of copying and pasting the folder that I'll have on a CD-R, if I understand correctly?
Because in the section "Then burn the ISO image to a blank CD-ROM (See this article)", my burning software isn't even listed... (which is TXones, which you probably know, and it actually works very well)
So I still don't know how to proceed, I should be able to do it with TXones, right?
Well, I'm going to bed, I'll look into this tomorrow
Thanks again for everything

Hello
yes it’s meant to be burned onto a CD
uh, no I don’t know TXones, but check if you have a "burn image" option in the menus.

Hello
Yes, yes, I have indeed "burned discImage" and even "extraction discImage"
But the file I downloaded is a compressed file of 688 MB, so I decompressed it, of course, and now I have 7 new files on my desktop.
So these 7 files/folders are as follows =>
1: KNOPPIX (a folder)
2 and 3: autorun (2 in total, one opens with "notepad", and the other opens a black window for a split second, then I immediately get a black page with the penguin on it that says KNOPPIX INFO)
4: autorun (a shortcut) cd rom (a picture with a penguin's face on it)
5: cdrom: It's just an image of a penguin that opens with "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer"
6: index (a shortcut to a webpage),
7: and boot (a folder).
So I won't hide from you that I don't know what to do with all this?
I'm lost....
Thanks in advance if you can shed some light on all this.

Good evening
No, you shouldn't decompress the ISO file.
You choose "burn disc image" and then it will ask you for the file; you select the ISO file and start the burning process.

Hello Xavstarblues
I have a new issue, now when I launch my burning software "TX Ones" and I click "burn disc image", I go to my desktop where my file is located, and I can't select it because it doesn't even appear in the window that opens.
I see various folders on my desktop (not all of them), but I don't see that one.
What should I do?
Thank you
Thierry
