find hidden text in a jpg image Solved/Closed

Question

Hello,
I received a photo with hidden text in it, asking me to find the text. Despite my searches on different forums, I can't find a solution. I tried GIMP with the stegano plugin, but it gives me an error message. There must be a solution, but I have exhausted my knowledge and resources, so I am turning to the public on the forums. If you have any ideas...

I imagine two possibilities.

1) The text is actually written within the file itself.

Download a hex editor (Hexedit for example) and browse through the file until you see words.

2) It is a coded/encrypted message hidden in the code of the file.
This can be done for example with the program Invisible Secrets, which also allows for decryption. But you will probably need a "key" (a password).

Have you tried opening this image with Paint, for example, and looking for a tiny text written inside? (using a zoom on the image).

I tried zooming in with Photoshop but there is nothing visible! And I think it’s more of a software issue, but which one? There are plenty of programs for this kind of manipulation for bmp images but very few for jpg images (from what I've read, it's something about pixel compression... anyway, it's complicated for novices in this field)
Plus, the only one I found, GIMP/Stegano, shows an error message.
Any suggestions????

To respond to Garion, I can't make this photo available since it's a private photo.
I tried Invisible Secret but I don't have a password, or is it still part of the riddle...
Otherwise, I'll try hexedit and I'll keep you updated. I hope it's not too technical of a program...

It's quite simple. The interface isn't really well designed.

With this program, you can see the exact content of the file byte by byte (hexadecimal code, from 00 to FF, to translate the bits, from 0000'0000 to 1111'1111).

A hexadecimal code can also be translated into ASCII code (see link), in other words, for some of these numbers it gives letters and punctuation. This is how text files .txt are saved.

A little manipulation you can do: open the Windows notepad (start menu - all programs - accessories), write a few lines, and save the file on your desktop.

Open this file with Hexedit. You will see the code of the file in the middle, incomprehensible, and in the right column, you will see the "translation" of these hexadecimal numbers into text (by the ASCII standard). You will clearly be able to read your written text (although without the formatting of any line breaks you might have made).

Thus, I suggest you try to see if, by opening your image file, you might randomly find some values (which are supposed to represent information about the image, thus incomprehensible) that actually form words (in ASCII code). You will see them appear directly in the right column.

However, it might take a bit longer, as an image file is quite large.

I don't know if this is going to work, it might be too twisted :-) but I hope my explanations will help you at least use Hexedit.

I just tried hexedit. As you said, there are lines and lines of letters, dots, punctuation, and other signs. In short, I just scrolled through the entire column from top to bottom and didn’t find anything resembling words aligned to form a sentence. However, your method with the text file worked well and the sentence can indeed be found.
If there are any other ideas, I'm interested because I'm also learning a lot.
