if that doesn't work go to start/control panel/administrative tools/services/
then stop the auto update service

I would delete this registry key directly since it only serves to start the update service at PC startup. It doesn't delete anything except the automatic launch at startup.
If after that we want to do an update anyway, it’s enough to launch it manually (by going to the update site, or launching the auto-update through the icon in the start menu which is somewhere).

I went to the registry. I have HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run. After "Run" I don't have the rest. I already went to Sophos, but after scanning my system they didn't detect any Trojan. I tried with Spybot, negative, with Norton negative, and with The Cleaner negative. However, I still have my message: "wuauclt.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We apologize for the inconvenience." that keeps displaying constantly. By the end of the day, I have a small hundred of them and it's becoming a pain.

Re, when you run, it's in the right column that you need to look; if it's not there, it's simply your update that's acting up. You need to find the automatic update function in the control panel and disable it...

I found a way to remove it. It involves running the checks on our computer with Spybot.

I have the same trojan =( I'm not sure, but I think that Qpybot in safe mode might be able to remove the trojan if it detects it, of course. I recommend doing the same for the scans, that is to say in safe mode, which will make it easier to remove viruses (because they are not necessarily running in safe mode).

I also have the same problem: a window opens telling me that wuauclt.exe has encountered a problem and must close. This already happened to me when I tried to install XP Pack 2, which I quickly uninstalled.
I looked in the registry editor but I don't have Microsoft Auto Update. I tried to go into the control panel but it crashes every time.

Same problem. Nothing with SPYBOT, no effect with disabling updates, nothing in HKLM. Can this mess be found elsewhere than in the recommended paths in HKLM?
