Encoding an MP3 to FLAC? What’s the benefit?

Hello everyone,

I was told while reading some articles here and there about sampling and quantification, that the benefit of encoding music in FLAC would be to do so from an audio CD which has superior quality to MP3, in order to lose nothing in quality.

My question is, is there any point in encoding MP3 music in such a format?
If I understand correctly, I would say no, but perhaps you will teach me that it is possible to refine a sound through this encoding or to reduce quantization noise, etc. etc. ... anyway, I hope you can enlighten me.

A big thank you and see you soon

    Hi!

The MP3 is a lossy format, which means that the track, once encoded (that is to say compressed, and therefore altered), can never be restored to its original form (typically a lossless format: wav, ape, flac or other). Thus, it is useless to re-encode an MP3 in a lossless format, or even into another MP3 file; there will be no gain in quality (on the contrary).

So you are correct in thinking that there is no point in transforming an MP3 into FLAC.

Hoping I helped you, have a good evening!
