est ce qu'en plus du serveur X tu as un environnement (kde, gnome, icewm etc etc...) installé ?
autre piste : regarde un peu ce qui se trouve dans /etc/X11/XFree86Config-4
(ou sans le -4 si il n'y en a pas)
il doit y avoir une section "screen" ou "device" ou qqch comme ca qui définit l'ecran, les résolutions utilisées etc

pour ce qui est de lenvironnement jai installé kde sa ne marche pas.

bah, tu peux toujours tenter un
dpkg-reconfigure xsever-common
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86
sinon, j'en sais rien... tu as la résolution a 640x480 : peut etre faut il lancer virtual machine dans cette résolution ou changer ca??
commence par dpkg, bidouille eventuellement les sections 'Display' si ca marche pas..
