Hello,
I tried in the command prompt "convert a: /fs:ntfs /x" but it says:
"access denied, you do not have sufficient privileges.
you must run this utility in elevated mode."
What should I do to convert my external hard drive (1 TB) to NTFS without formatting it?
Configuration: Windows Vista Firefox 3.0.8

    Hello.

You need to run the cmd.exe command as an administrator.
In Search, type cmd, then (at the top) right-click on cmd.exe
    Select Run as administrator.

Thank you, but now it says:
"The integrity of this drive is uncertain and it cannot be converted.
You need to reset the integrity bit of this drive to zero by running
CHKDSK /F or by allowing AUTOCHK to run at the next startup.
    The conversion has failed."
    What should I do?

Are you sure it's Reader A: , because that hasn't existed for quite a while now.

Yes, it is the external hard drive letter.
