FTP error 500

Solved

Hello,

For the past 15 days, I haven’t been able to transfer my files to my website hosted at free.fr. Each time I get a 500 error, you can’t come here. I changed my internet access from Wanadoo to AOL, and that’s when the problem started. How can I activate the firewall or delete the FTP address and replace it? Thank you for your help.

Access to Free personal sites FTP is restricted to French IPs.

Logged in via Free, use yourlogin.free.fr

Logged in via another ISP, use ftpperso.free.fr

I don’t know if it’s a bit late but…
At Free, if you connect from a different ISP than Free you have to log in like this

Address: ftpperso.free.fr
Login: Your Login
PWD: Your PWD

There you go, you just have to change the address, that’s all… I found it in Free’s FAQ.

There you go…

Alright, let me be clear.
FREE's FTP is inaccessible from a NON-French ISP.
They are accessible with any French ISP.

For NON-French users, the solution is the NetShadow software, mentioned above.

Hi, I think that in life and especially in computing you have to be sure of nothing
I’m in Venezuela and I have several Free accounts
One works and not the other
so your story about French or not French isn’t true

To avoid the 500 error you need to change IP, so unplug the modem and plug it back in. I noticed that if I had a 500 error in the evening, in the morning with another IP it worked.

Indeed, for me it worked... 3 free sites accessible and 1 with a 500 error. Reinitialization of the IP address by restarting a connection. The 500 error disappears with the new IP address.
PS: I use FILEZILLA

Hmm it seems the problem doesn’t come from the IP because I reset my line 5 times and I made sure I had a different IP each time with this site: http://www.mon-ip.com/
Yet nothing changes. Does Free do as it pleases? :/

I just saw this in the FAQ on Free's site:
- FTP: I can't upload files to the FTP
- To connect for the first time and determine any configuration error (firewall / router etc.), we advise temporarily disabling all firewall software and using the latest version of FileZilla in passive mode.

I haven't been able to try it since I found it.
I hope that's what isn't working (I hope so too...)

I did it and I disabled the firewall, but it didn’t work. So did it work for you?

Hello,

Same problem here. I already have 2 Free accounts that work more or less (so AOL has nothing to do with it), but the latest one won’t go through. Error 500. I also tried removing the FW but it makes no difference.

Wouldn’t it be false advertising from Free if we can’t use the new accounts without using Free as the ISP?

Anyway it pisses me off. Isn’t there a lucky person who happened to find a solution by chance?

Actually, this problem corresponds to a DNS resolution error. The issue generally arises when trying to access an FTP site hosted by an ISP (FAI) through another ISP. An authorization problem between the two ISPs may occur, or a DNS resolution problem. I think this corresponds more to a resolution issue. Additionally, depending on the DNS server you are passing through, you may or may not be able to access your web space.

It's stated in Free's documentation:
http://www.assistancefree.fr/v1/documentation/?forfait=axl&rac=363/362

"You must connect via FTP directly to "login".free.fr only if the Internet access provider of the connection used is Free"

I think this restriction is active only on recent accounts. This, I believe, explains all the behaviors described in the thread.

I'm a Free customer myself (Freebox, phone) and I find it rough not being able to update my pages when I’m traveling. So yes, one can be angry about Free.

It has happened several times that I come across this error (perhaps it’s related to AOL ??)

~ Connecting...
~ Connected to ftpperso.free.fr, waiting for response...
< 220 Update server for Free.fr personal pages version [today]
> USER username
< 500 You cannot come here

document at Free on the FAQ: https://www.free.fr/assistance/?forfait=axl&rac=347/325

Using ftpperso.free.fr, and not being physically in France does not work.
The offer is reserved for metropolitan France, for legal reasons.

However it works by going through a proxy in France (see list on proxy.org)
for example: http://yblock.info/

It is then possible via the page http://ftpperso.free.fr
to upload files

I just moved to New Caledonia, and my ISP is no longer considered French ... I had the same problems as you to connect to ftpperso.free.fr ... error 500

I spent the entire weekend dealing with proxy stuff and all that crap ...

I found the LA solution on this very well-made site: I installed freedhom as instructed and miracle: it works like a charm ... just as well with FileZilla as with FireFTP ...

Does the fact that he’s in Belgium pose a problem as well, my friend?

yes,

since free does not accept "IP" outside France.

Hello,

sorry but it must not have anything to do with not being in France, because I am in Lille, at Télé2 and I have the same problem. Every so often it will pass, but most of the time "error 500".

So the answer is not "neither AOL, nor outside France". Let's keep looking... unless someone has a valid answer from Free, other than "it's your fault".

I received a response from Free regarding the problem; it’s the FTP content that disturbs them. I have several, and only the one with content that disturbs them (software storage) is blocked. They told me I could reactivate it, but the content might disappear. As of now, I still haven’t managed to access it.

Well, for me too, same problem, I have AOL, and I want to transfer my files to Free, but it doesn’t work, error 500, and yet I’ve tested everything! Leech FTP, FTP Expert, FontPages2000, Dreamweaver MX... And many others! Still the same! Error 500! It annoys me especially since I run a band's site, and I need to update it as often as possible, so I’m forced to hand my folders to a friend so he can publish them! In short, it’s chaos... But what’s certain is that I’m going to take the Free Box, but I still have to wait at least 1 year, so I really need to find another way than giving the files to a friend! HELP ME... I’m desperate!

I have AOL, it works for two accounts that were created more than a year ago, but it doesn’t work for a recently created account.

same problem, my ISP is Tele2, Free must block other IPs than Free, yet they say that one can connect with other IPs via ftpperso.free.fr

I use Télé2, and I have a site that I must be the only one to access (great!) from home, and essentially the backend.php3 file of spip. I noticed in the access stats that there were 25% connections coming from Sweden... And Télé2 is a Swedish company to begin with. I conclude that sometimes Free's servers misidentify me as Swedish. So does Free filter by origin countries or by originating ISPs? In the first case I would have a 1 in 4 chance to connect...

he needs to look for a free.fr proxy or something like that I already searched but nothing if someone connects to work from Free.fr and wants to help us install a proxy server so we can work quietly with the latest accounts created .

I see that I’m not the only one to have this problem!
I’m in Montreal temporarily and my ISP is: Sympatico
I’d like to be able to access my FTP account like you all here!
Waiting for a solution, best regards.

I have a Free account recently created on a Free High-Speed account at my father's place, I have Cegetel at my mother's, and I can't connect from my mother's place.

I'll try from my father's place, and I'll get back to you! ;-)

I’ve got a better one: I’m in the US, I have 2 Free accounts, with one I get a 500 error and with the other everything goes through smoothly.
All of this, of course, using the same connection!!

Hello
I have exactly the same problem on Free: 1 site works and 2 has a 500 error and I cannot transfer.
I contacted Free by phone with my usernames and password; they connected to the 2 sites without problems and told me that it comes from my machine.
I ran the test with 4 different software programs and it’s the same, I even disconnected all virus protections, firewall, anti-spyware, and it still doesn’t work.
I don’t know what to do.
Thank you for your help
Best regards
