FTP error 500 Solved

Question

Hello,

For the past 15 days, I haven’t been able to transfer my files to my website hosted at free.fr. Each time I get a 500 error, you can’t come here. I changed my internet access from Wanadoo to AOL, and that’s when the problem started. How can I activate the firewall or delete the FTP address and replace it? Thank you for your help.

I just saw this in the FAQ on Free's site:
- FTP: I can't upload files to the FTP
- To connect for the first time and determine any configuration error (firewall / router etc.), we advise temporarily disabling all firewall software and using the latest version of FileZilla in passive mode.

I haven't been able to try it since I found it.
I hope that's what isn't working (I hope so too...)

sorry but it must not have anything to do with not being in France, because I am in Lille, at Télé2 and I have the same problem. Every so often it will pass, but most of the time "error 500".

So the answer is not "neither AOL, nor outside France". Let's keep looking... unless someone has a valid answer from Free, other than "it's your fault".

Same for me: 2 accounts, 2 URLs. The first one works, no problem. The second one gives a 500 error. I have AOL as the provider/failure and it has nothing to do with my first account, which works.

After inquiries: Free no longer unofficially allows us to have a site while using another ISP. For now they block the latest sites that are on a server other than the original server (I personally think they're victims of their success). Either we absolutely want to keep these sites and we must change ISPs or connect with the 'old' modem — or, what I did, we must host the site elsewhere! Personally, I looked for paid hosts (60 euros for a hundred MB) but eventually found 100 MB free on Voilà?fr Only problem: we don't use FTP software, so updating is quite slow since we have to go to their site each time. There you go, end of the story with Free!

You will probably find this strange, but I am experiencing the same issue and I am with Tele2. When I do FTP transfers from my college, I encounter no problems, so we should assume that Free also blocks Tele2 users.

Furthermore, I would like to know if there is a way to make Free believe that we have another IP address.

I think the problem with Free is more troublesome than expected—after 10 days of being unable to connect, it’s working again! If you don’t update your site often, leave it on Free! no long-term solution, I’m afraid. I ended up reconnecting my old modem and it worked flawlessly.... Take heart!

As for me, I still can’t make my transfers to the free.fr “ftpperso” anymore for a month now. But I have a friend with me in the same city and he doesn’t have the slightest problem with the transfer … and I live in Morocco lol.

Well, for me too, same problem, I have AOL, and I want to transfer my files to Free, but it doesn’t work, error 500, and yet I’ve tested everything! Leech FTP, FTP Expert, FontPages2000, Dreamweaver MX... And many others! Still the same! Error 500! It annoys me especially since I run a band's site, and I need to update it as often as possible, so I’m forced to hand my folders to a friend so he can publish them! In short, it’s chaos... But what’s certain is that I’m going to take the Free Box, but I still have to wait at least 1 year, so I really need to find another way than giving the files to a friend! HELP ME... I’m desperate!

I’ve got a better one: I’m in the US, I have 2 Free accounts, with one I get a 500 error and with the other everything goes through smoothly. All of this, of course, using the same connection!!

I have exactly the same problem on Free: 1 site works and 2 has a 500 error and I cannot transfer.
I contacted Free by phone with my usernames and password; they connected to the 2 sites without problems and told me that it comes from my machine.
I ran the test with 4 different software programs and it’s the same, I even disconnected all virus protections, firewall, anti-spyware, and it still doesn’t work.
I don’t know what to do.

I own several old Free addresses of the type login.free.fr. To circumvent the 500 error in order to feed a .com DNS at 1 euro per month from Amen, I redirected it to one of my old addresses and reactivated an index.htm page which served as a staging ground to deploy the dozens of pages of the new site. On a Free server, as long as an index.htm is active, it stays alive, I think. Moral: people who have spare Free addresses should share them with others! Actually I have a PHP-Nuke site and I realized that only the index isn’t working.  Personally I had a backup of the site and I restored it on another hosting space I had with Free. I made an HTML page with an automatic redirect and with SQL queries it goes pretty fast to restore... ^^

Same problem here. I already have 2 Free accounts that work more or less (so AOL has nothing to do with it), but the latest one won’t go through. Error 500. I also tried removing the FW but it makes no difference.

Wouldn’t it be false advertising from Free if we can’t use the new accounts without using Free as the ISP?

Anyway it pisses me off. Isn’t there a lucky person who happened to find a solution by chance?

My friend and my brother wanted to create a website with stijns.free.fr and another one, on a different home address in Belgium. Three accounts created from the same IP (on my PC). Two 500 errors! I think that, as mentioned in previous posts, it comes from the fact that Free blocks access to the account from certain IPs. On my side, I have 2 FTP accesses: an old one that works from anywhere (work and at home where my ISP is cable), and the other (more recent) only works at home, 500 error otherwise...

To avoid the 500 error you need to change IP, so unplug the modem and plug it back in. I noticed that if I had a 500 error in the evening, in the morning with another IP it worked.

Grr this annoys me when people don’t read the entire thread and think they have the miracle solution!

For info:
I’m connected from Belgium, I have 4 Free hosts.
I can confirm that the country address isn’t a problem, my ISP is "mobistar". I can access 3 of my accounts very well, I can upload and download without any issue.
Only one of my accounts returns a 500 error, and it isn’t the most recently created account.

In short, for me no one has the right answer!

Oh, I almost forgot, stop picking on Free: you mustn't forget that it's a free solution: personally if I have 4 accounts with them it's because I design sites for cheapskates who don't want to part with a single cent. All my personal sites are hosted for paying around ten euros/month... and there, indeed, we have the right to complain if there are issues.

It's stated in Free's documentation:

"You must connect via FTP directly to "login".free.fr only if the Internet access provider of the connection used is Free"

I think this restriction is active only on recent accounts. This, I believe, explains all the behaviors described in the thread.

I'm a Free customer myself (Freebox, phone) and I find it rough not being able to update my pages when I’m traveling. So yes, one can be angry about Free.

Hello, I have this problem myself on several sites hosted with Free, and after reading all your comments, I simply ended up turning off my modem and turning it back on after a few seconds. I was able to see that access to all my accounts was possible again!  I also had a problem sending emails for 2 days, well, that problem is also solved!   My setup: I’m with Neuf, on ADSL 512Mb (yes, deep in the countryside!) and my modem is connected permanently (sending images from a webcam to a site).  Turning it off and back on probably changed its IP!  If you have this problem too, start with this trick, it costs nothing...  ;-)

Personally, I am, like you, abroad as well, and every time I got a 500 error on the FTP of one of my Free accounts, it was due to a fault of my own (no matter which software was used: FileZilla, Windows Explorer, EditPlus, DreamWeaver, or even the ftp.exe command in the command line, or more recently with www.net2ftp.com ;-))) I’ll explain: I often type persoftp.free.fr instead of ftpperso.free.fr or I make a mistake in the password. Before hitting Free, please read their FAQ carefully and check your entered configuration 10 times, even if you have to re-enter it several times!

I spent the entire weekend dealing with proxy stuff and all that crap ...

I found the LA solution on this very well-made site: I installed freedhom as instructed and miracle: it works like a charm ... just as well with FileZilla as with FireFTP ...

Hello,  For me there is a 500 error, but not when transferring on the FTP. Access to the FTP via FTPExpert (or others) works perfectly. Access to the HTML pages as well.  The problem comes from accessing PHP pages that read or modify the database; there I get repeated 500 errors...  And yet, I am with Free!!! I am on a degrouped Freebox in Grenoble for a little over a month, and I haven’t had this error until a few days ago :S  A little help?  Sir_DEC

For my part, several sites on Free and only one with the 500 error following a modification in WordPress. whether we have Free connection or not, it doesn't change the display of the pages and whatever the page. on the other hand, I use LeechFTP for the transfer and I have no problems at that level. Everything is in the display of my site (the oldest one in fact) I did try a complete erasure but nothing helps, I'm a bit lost at the moment...

Hello everyone, Being in Italy, I have the same problem as most of you. I therefore downloaded Netshadow as recommended but I still can’t perform transfers. I tested Filezilla, CoreFTP, FTPExpe rt but it doesn’t work. I no longer have the 500 error but I get the following message: "connection to SOCKS server refused or time over"  Is this a software issue and if so can you recommend one that works ?? Otherwise, is it desperate ??  I also have a problem with the messaging software (Outlook) which crashes. Should I switch software ??  Thanks in advance

Try changing the host in the FTP transfer software...  I was with Free with a recent address and my Free site via WordPress redirected to a .tk, and now I’m at my mother's with Orange and the Livebox Sagem. I did indeed have access to my FTP by going through a web browser but not with FileZilla (error 500).  So in FileZilla with my host = monlogin.free.fr I had error 500 but when we modified the host = ftpperso.free.fr and kept the same user name and password as before, and well I gained access. The 500 error disappeared.  It was really simple. Strange that it doesn’t work for everyone...
